Seagull has out to shame, of course my favourite album has some fantastic sax on it, Van Der Graaf Generator 'Pawn Hearts', with David Jackson playing not one, but two saxes at once. To solo in 'Man Erg' is amazing.

I might also mention King Crimson 'Red' with Mel Collins and Ian McDonald both providing the sax.

Big Grin

You're right, but "Cure For Pain" is my favourite...

And Graham is no mean saxophonist himself!

To all those with much more expert eperience than me, I add/endorse:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue (surely a good place to start if you are starting from scratch)

John Coltrane, A Love Supreme

Van Morrison, Poetic Champions Compose

And perhaps a more unusual suggestion, also from Ireland:
Taste (Rory Gallagher playing sax), On the Boards

Rendez-Vous album by Jean Michel Jarre. Can't remember the track name but it moved me when I first heard it. Later found out that it was a tribute to one of his friends who was killed in the Space Shuttle disaster. The astronaut was going to play the sax from space for Jarre's Houston Concert.

According to AMG Raphael Ravenscroft played Alto on City to City album and specifically states he provided the "fiery sax" on baker Street.

Couple of ideas:

Phil Woods - Many albums with many groups. Song for Sisyphus. Known as the keeper of the flame.
Richie Cole - Hollywood Madness. Pretty good, but not much out now.
Eddie Jefferson (w/Richie Cole) - The Liveliest. Several others on Muse Records.
Zoot Sims - one of the Herman Herd.
Art Pepper - Plus Eleven, plus many others. One of the brightest boppers.
Wayne Shorter - Might try Miles "Nefertiti" from the later Miles.
John Gilmore - Sun Ra's sax man. I have Other Voices, Other Blues, with Michael Ray, and these guys rock. Hard to find.

Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, the other big name sax guys never did much for me.

on top of several already mentioned ones here are two very impressive albums:

Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the abstract truth
Sonny Rollins - East Broadway run down

Miles Davis - Kind of blue

Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio

Hi Graham

I was waiting for MilesSmiles list before getting back but as you've asked:

Thank you and everybody else for such a good response.

I'm gradually when time permits intending to listen to all your recommendations that I'm able to find on Spotify and am not already acquainted with. I'm more interested in Rock but love all good music including Classical. I've been a keen fan of Soft Machine since the late 60's and have most of their albums and I really like Fela Kuti. I'm already into Van der Graaf Generator, Lou Reed, the Floyd, Kevin Ayers, Baker Street and the Beatles/Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. I probably would have added Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (Bogus Man); the Stones - Let It Bleed; Foreigner 4 (Urgent). I particularly love to hear a good sax.

I've already enjoyed a few Jan Garbarek albums that have been mentioned and look forward to sampling all the artists mentioned. I hope a lot of other Forum members benefit too.

Kind Regards

Stuart
