Supernait / DVD5 digital connection Help?

Posted by: CimBom on 24 October 2010

Hi All,

Please be patient as I’m new to this so in some peoples eyes “A bit of a Biff’

At the moment I have RCA L/R analogue connecting my DVD5 to my supernait CD input.

I’m planning to connect SN – DVD5 with a digital connection to make use of the onboard DAC.
The questions are:-

1. If I connect the DVD5 with RCA L/R analogue to the L/R analogue assigned to AUX 1, am I already making use of the SN onboard DAC?

2. What cable to use, toslink or coaxal? It say in the manual that the default digital input is assigned to AUX 1 and would be a ‘’toslink’’ optical?

3. Is the onboard DAC assigned to AUX 1? And only AUX 1?

4. When using the DVD5 do I have to change settings and if so what setting do I change. Assuming I’m using the DVD5 with cd’s for audio only.

5. Please recommend a cable.

I’m grateful for a push in the right direction and all advice is appreciated.
Thanks

CimBom,

you can switch input assignments between digital and analog. Check the manual for default settings and instructions on assignment.

Generally I would favour a coaxial connection between DVD5 and Supernait. The Naim DC1 was originally designed for the job. It's a superb digital i/c. If that's too much then I'm sure others here will suggest something to fit your budget. However, in my experience, the DC1 takes some beating.

The DAC in the Supernait cannot accept a Bitstream input so you will need to set the DVD5 to output only PCM 2 channel.

For all that, you might just find that things sound best using the DAC in the DVD5 and connecting via analog DIN-DIN. After all, the DACs are very similar...

Cimbom the only way to take advantage of the supernait dac is to use either the two RCA or two optical inputs on the rear, they are bunched together. If you are using anything else on the rear then its analogue, i.e. the DV5 has already carried out the D to A conversion.
