defending a thread from flames
Posted by: mikeeschman on 23 October 2009
Richard Dane, can you recommend a method to contain an uncontrolled flamer in a way that preserves the thread, so that the thread is not removed?
And as long as I'm asking, has Naim deputized Munch to monitor the forum? Does Munch serve any official capicity on these forums?

Actually, any forum is kind of amazing when you think about. Here we all are from different countries, professions, ages, backgrounds, and incomes all talking about a hobby that interests us and we do so in a largely friendly manner. This kind of interaction would not have been possible just 15 years ago and unbelievable to our grandparents. Great thing when you think about it. Think of all the knowledge and insight exchanged. Problems we have are really just tempests in a teapot. We'll all live.

I think this is obscene, especially when I've been laid-off for five-months and am trying to figure out how to prepare for the arrival of our first child in January.
I drive older, used, mid-level Olive and CB gear. My upgrade plans/dreams are modest (a 282 one day), it may not even happen.
Then after I think about it for a minute, maybe I'm the one who doesn't belong here.
For the life of me I can't see why you should be so offended. I doubt many of us "Throw Around" money on Hi-Fi; it's probably our main hobby and we each indulge to suit our individual circumstances.
I deduce from your posting you're a young chap, currently in poor financial shape. When you get old and crumbly like myself and hopefully more successful, does this mean that, even though you love Hi-Fi and music, you won't indulge in better kit in case you offend someone less well off than yourself? Oh, sorry, obviously not -
So ,that's kicking on for nearly £5K! On one component!quote:...My upgrade plans/dreams are modest (a 242 one day)...
I've been in a similar situation to yourself when I was younger but that didn't make me envy and resent those who were more successful than me. Rather, it spurred me on to do well so I could get the things I desired.

shoot6x7, thanks for the reality check.
I am now an official grumpy ol' git with a pension that is more than enough to keep me an'erself in the manner to which we have become accustomed. Its easy for me and others to be impervious to the chat in these pages about 555's and how best to use a pair of 500's like its this years winter coat fashion, but it must be soul destroying to people in your situation.
All I can say is that some of us have been there, your post reminded me of my time when the kids were coming along and eating money and I was holding down 2 sometimes 3 jobs. My only thankfulness is I have never been laid off
Hang in buddy.

At risk of offending people, both through pedantry and thread-drift, it should definitely be 'forums' not 'fora'.
The Romans used the word 'forum', but it was already used in a plural sense, and was not conventionally pluralised. Every town had its forum, they were just not referred to collectively. "Let's go to the market-places..."
The word has migrated into English (and other languages) and altered its meaning to become somtehing of which it is commonplace to have more than one, but there is neither precedent nor reason to pluralise it as a Latin word.
In any case, it is a spurious argument to claim that a word should follow the rules of the language it originated from. Do know the Inuit pluralisation rules for 'anorak'? (In fact as this is already an anglicization it's a moot point, but it certainly is not 'anoraks' ('anorait', probably 'anoraak' maybe)).
Sorry to bang the dra about this.
Lovely to have a 'wouldn't it be nice if we all got along?' thread. I'll drink to that.

I always enjoy your posts, but am sorry to here about your employment situation. Hang in there, things will get better. In the end everything will turn out all right. If it's not alright, it's not the end.
You belong here as much as anyone.

Good topic Mike, even although you started it in response to one individual getting under your skin you do raise valid points on general civility etc.
As one who has been guilty of prickly comments from time to time (ahem..) I hereby pledge not to do the following:
Post in the evenings after having a dram (I'm not the only guilty one there!)
Post if I am at work and hopped on here at a lunchtime while in a shitty mood.
Post in response to yet another inane (oops that was alittle perjorative!) post on performance of unreleased DAC's
Ok, I guess I'm not posting again then!
Jim

Yep. You've driven me away with your incessant harping on about forum incivility!
For the avoidance of doubt, that was a joke!
For the avoidance of doubt? Bloody hell, I've been spending too much time with lawyers!

I only post on two MB's (this being one).
I like the naim forum and the characters on it...life would be dull if we just associated with folk we agreed with. I enjoy Munch's posts since he tends to be listening to a lot of stuff that I listen to, I enjoy Mike's because we come at things from a different angle. It's horses for courses.
Some threads do seem to spiral out of control into spats between folk.
I wonder if the reason for this, is the lack of direct links to PM other members (without using email)? On the other board I post to, this works well and folks retreat to their own little PM spats, as opposed to bringing down the board. Not sure if this would help here?

You're right Tony, if there are people on the forum who want to debate about adding a second 555PS to their system to pull out more then that's their prerogative, and if they have the cash to do so ... all the power to them - pun intended :-) And I'm not 'that' offended.

When better times return I would love to get a used (I only ever buy used) SME 10 or a 282 and 300, but I suspect that I don't fly high enough to justify that sort of spending ... the wife's 15 year old car needs replacing and mine needs $2,000 worth of work on it ! And I need to accumulate $130,000 for the kid's university fund.

I don't envy or resent the success of others or their situations. Each person on this forum has worked hard to be in a position to spend money on their systems. My brother has an SME 30-2/552/500 based system, he works in the city in London, he works hard for the obscene money he earns. As an engineer, I'll never make that sort of coin, should have gone into finance !!
BTW Tony, I'm 41.

Huh! You young whipper-snapper!
Who knows what the winds of fortune will bring each of us? I like to think I'm now financially secure until I fall off my perch but it's by no means guaranteed & if push comes to shove my Hi-Fi kit will be up for sale (after SWMBO's entirely superfluous jewellery of course) so I'll enjoy it whilst I'm able to.
I'm afraid engineers seem to be criminally undervalued in most places; a nonsense when you consider their contribution to our modern society.

Maybe my post was a little too subtle for you Patrick ... it was supposed to put things in perspective. It was supposed to show the diversity in this forum, in my example through income. It was supposed to show how, despite our differences, we still have common ground.

I thought that was Clay's point. Your's sounded a lot like sour grapes to me.

And my threadjack comment was not only a joke, but also not directed specifically at you.
I am as guilty as anyone for any and all transgressions, with the exception of having active 500s and dual 555ps.
Seriously though, good luck in your job hunt. Or better yet, good luck to your kids regarding getting scholarships!!!!

Shoot,
I just looked at your system in your profile. Maybe it will make you feel better to know that your kit is light years beyond what most in the world could afford, and in some cases more than some people make in their entire lives.
Not only that, but regardless of price/budget, i would bet it sounds better than 90% of the non-Naim kits on the planet!

May I, in the most respectful fashion, suggest that you may have done Patrick something of a disservice? I do not believe that his post was in anyway mean. I certainly did not interpret it that way.
Perhaps you may reflect on whether you may have jumped to an incorrect conclusion?

Did not intend to be mean in the least. I was making reference to the $130K he said he'll need for college.
Given he doesn't have a job right now, I though it was obvious, but certainly not malicious. And definitely meant sincerely.
His comments, and situation, are certainly enough to make me get a vasectomy though. I know my college personally cost well over $120 in tuition/board alone. Not even considering books, and other expenses.
It is tough.
Exiled, thanks for not taking offense to my comment. I was not disparaging you in any fashion at all.
