Mana - Soundstage or Speaker Stands?

Posted by: John on 11 July 2002

My current system is P9/XX2/Prefix/CDS1/52/135's/SBLs. My 2 sources and 52 sit on a 2 tier stand and my PSUs and 135's sit on a 4 tier stand. My P9 sits directly on top of my 52 on the top self (minimal difference with my CDS1 removed and the P9 on top shelf and 52 on bottom shelf).

I am considering buying a soundstage or mana stands for my SBLs but don't have the opportunity of listening to either before I buy. I have decided against the Fraim primarily because of price. I also like the musical presentation the Mana stands offer and based on my experience I discount just about all of the negative posts.

Since I am happy with my current setup I worry that I will be moving my system into a better/different sound by phasing or using the speaker stands. I would like to know the character changes I would experience going either direction. Does phasing bring out a leaner sound? More dynamic? Smoother? Anything negative? My guess is phasing the sources will bring the greatest change but I very curious on the speaker stands as this might bring better performance from the speaker without changing my system's sound.

Any help is appreciated.

I was advised by Steve of Flat Earth Audio (now of NANA) to put Phase 1 under everything, including speakers, before lifting the sources higher off the floor. See also JW's answer in the "What Phase Before Speaker Stands?" thread in the Mana forum.

I seem to have misquoted Steve of NANA in my previous post. My apologies to Steve, and please don't hold him accountable for anything I said. eek
