Can anybody recommend a reasonably priced GOOD sounding car stereo?

The Nakamichi CD-45z that we have in our Mk4 Golf is superb, and very cheap secondhand. Try eBay.

Alpine seem have a good range (and not too bling). I just fitted a nice enough system in my new car with a CD/tuner/iPod controller. They produce iPod controllers/tuners now with no CD at all if that is how you listen to your music.
Save some money for better speakers, again a few quid only will make a big difference over most 'standard fit' kit.

I'll second Nakamichi - if you can get one these days! I wanted to upgrade the hifi in the Audi and went through a Sony and an Alpine before settling on a Nak CD-400. It sounded far and away the best (most engaging), and that's just using the internal amp and the standard Audi speakers. I fitted an iPod adaptor as well which goes through the Aux-in RCAs on the back. It cost peanuts, charges the 'Pod, and sounds pretty good - infinitely better than the FM connection that I used before. Icing on the cake is that it looks good, nicely understated, as opposed to so many in-car units that look like they were designed to appeal to a younger customer...

But bearing in mind the very imaginative stuff which Naim has been launching recently (some of which would have been darned near heresy in the 'old days') I'm waiting with baited breath for the Naim 'DIN E' fit car stereo to go into my treasured Fiesta, and Dr P could put one in his Sunbeam, and everything.
No, don't laugh

Very true - little sound deadening between me and the engine and what deadening is there is knackered!

See what I mean:

Yes, the exhaust cam cover sits low down, yes you can see a little of it below the HT leads and close to the inner wing.
How do I get to it? Um with difficulty! - Makes working on an LP12 seem very easy by comparison.
Actually the clearances are determined via bucket shims rather than adjusting rockers Munch. Each had to be individually ground/lapped to give the correct thickness in order to give the necessary valve clearance. Quite time consuming as one has to assemble the head to determine the clearances first and then dis-assemble again to get them right, but they hopefully will not be needing adjustment for 50K miles I hope. FYI. Magnets are handy when working there, but the big issue is ensuring the cam cover seals don’t leak oil onto the manifolds directly beneath – We used a Locktite sealant similar to what’s used on the DBL/SBL seals to seal the cam covers – Worked a treat!
As you can imagine there’s a lot of heat down there and it’s not possible to put one’s hands down there if the engine has been running more than 15 seconds from cold until it’s cooled down again. I had to fit a heat-shield after the manifolds cooked all the paint off the inner wing, not to mention the floor-pan on the passenger side (pot black seems to work ok here though)
AR cables!!! Pah – At least the cable dressing is neat though….. couldn’t allow chaffing under one’s bonnet could we!

Anyway, back on topic....

I vividly remember my friends' uncle having the Nakamichi with the double capstan playing into the original B&W LM1; superb. The car was a pristine; wire-wheeled, 4.2, racing green E-Type.

Richard,
I have a Nak 1000 in storage.
Now that would look great built into a car dash![]()
Munch, you should get it out of storage pronto! The 1000 is a lovely bit of kit. I've had many Naks over the years and still use a ZX-9 and LX-3, mainly for taping radio and favourite LPs - a better solution for listening to LP when in the bath or cooking, as there's no need to run to the system to lift the arm at the end of a side. The ZX-9, in particular, still sounds shockingly good.

I've heard that infamous unsavoury gentleman with the baseball cap who won £9m on the national lottery, has purchased a Naimed up Bentley, had it lowered, installed a big 23 inch woofer in the boot and fitted naim green LEDs underneath the chassis.

Obviously a classy gent?

I'm just kidding BigH mate...dunno if you remember him? He was the loser who built a banger racing circuit in back of his mansion and then got busted for selling Coke.
