Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin (BBC4 Aug 3)

Posted by: SteveGa on 27 July 2007

BBC 4 Friday 3rd August 2007, 21:30 to 22:30

Bruce Springsteen and the Sessions Band perform live from at The Point, Dublin, with a set that includes favourites from The Seeger Sessions and radical interpretations from the Springsteen songbook. Songs include Old Dan Tucker, Growin' Up, O Mary Don't You Weep and How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live.

I have the DVD and it is exceptional. A great set. If folks haven't heard Bruce with the Sessions band, it is very different than his excellent work with the E Street Band. While I prefer more "traditional, rocking" Bruce, it is tough not to enjoy this work as well.

I have the DVD and I remain to be convinced. The old songs are unceremoniously wedged into the prevailing format of the band and, for me, and several reviewers, it just doesn't work. Compare If I Should Fall Behind to the E. Street version and you wonder what possessed him to take such a beautiful melody and eliminate it!
