LCD TV problems

Posted by: BigH47 on 31 May 2008

We have had our JVC LT-32DY8ZJ since Christmas so I am assuming any "burn-in" should have occurred.
We are still getting "wobbly" faces for want of any other description, parts of the face seem to move independently of the head. Is this a problem of set-up or a function of the set?
I am looking for the shop to remedy but need to be armed with some information before proceeding.
TIA

H....

Sounds like it ~COULD~ be setup.

IF the shop sold it to you, agreed to install and properly setup the picture (as opposed to just plugging it in and tuning it in), and IF you've not changed any settings then get them involved straight away.

Otherwise I'd suggest you do the following to establish as to whether or not the set has a fault or just bad setup.

1) Make sure the TV isn't set on a silly picture mode like DYNAMIC... opt for cinema, standard or user mode

2) Wind the contrast to around 60% (don't know whether JVC use scales of 0-100, -40 to +40 or whatever, but just up from the mid-setting)

3) Bring the backlight to around 65%

4) Wind colour DOWN to around 35-40%

5) Adjust tint to the mid, possibly just on the red side of mid.

6) .... and this might make the biggest difference..... bring sharpness down to near minimum. Some screens the optimum sharpness is at the 50% level, but most it's way closer to 10%

7) Turn off ALL picture processing gizmos - like Active backlight, 100Hz, Film mode, DNR etc. You can then re-activate these settings one by one and see if they hold any benefit either individually or cumulatively.

When you've done this, try it out and see what happens.

Under no circumstances should you assume that these general settings will be perfect, but if they go some distance to curing the problem then you're on the right track and some further settings tweaks should get it spot on, or at least as close at can be achieved with that make & model of screen.

Fingers crsoesd! Winker

Good luck....

Other settings worth checking - brightness to around 50%, colour balance to one level cooler than what the set classes as neutral.

This can also be a result of poor quality signal. If you're using Sky then you're probably getting a good signal, but if you're using terestrial, a weak signal can make a set work harder and cause this kind of problem. A weak signal would also be apparent if the picture freezes, blocks or vanishes occasionally. In that situation, get an aerial expert out to check the aerial isn't damaged or in need of work.

The worst cases of "wobbly face" are seen on something like Deep Space Nine recorded on the Sky+ box lots of face closeups.

Mike

JVC setting choices Menu/Picture:-
mode/soft/bright/standard
contrast 0-63
brightness - 0 - 63
sharpness 0 - 15
colour 0 - 63
colour temp :- ocol/normal/warm
noise reduction off/minimum/medium/maximum

Please advise

Ok, try these & see what happens...

contrast 38
brightness 30
sharpness 2 or 3
colour 28
colour temp :- cool
noise reduction off

Also, go into your Sky box settings and make sure the box is set to output 16:9 widescreen and RGB (as opposed to CVBS, or s-video) over the scart.

Do you get probs when viewing dvd too?

Thanks again Mike,

I haven't watched too many videos recently, the ones I have watched are mainly music ones. I can't say I noticed it then. I'll try a couple when I get the chance.

I had that (very strange!) problem a few years ago with another tv. A firmware update sorted it out.

Time to contact your dealer I guess...

happy watching
