Upcoming Eddie Lang/ Joe Venuti box from Mosaic

Posted by: Sigmund on 26 February 2002

I got Mosaic's latest brochure today and they say they're going to do and EL/JV box in the near future! This is amazing news especially for lovers of hot jazz since Columbia/JSP/Koch et.al. keep recycling the same 50 tracks out of the 100+ that they recorded. I hope they're as complete as they usually are.

Mosaic have a sale in March 10% off CD boxes and a whopping 20% off vinyl!! So anyone looking for Miles Davis vinyl etc. Also if you go for slow shipping the ahem value for customs can be lowererd below the threshold for charges.

I dont know much about Hot jazz but Woody Allen did a recent great great series on BBC Radio 3 on the Jazz clarinet concentrating on New Orleans obviously. The way he said Barney BigAaard was a joy.

Any other Hot jazz recommendations for a beginner?

Hock, I'd go for it.

Horace Parlan and Teddy Wilson for me, though I really want the Maynard Ferguson for some obscure reason. I reckon I'll never find the Parlan single LPs so the box may be worth it.Parlan what do you think?

One worry I have with Mosaics though is that I much prefer single Lps or even Cds. I find the practicalities of the boxes puts me off slightly and also having to always check the discography.

John, check out Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Hot Sevens. This is the first book of the bible for jazz. The best sounding versions are on JSP in a four cds box that retails for $21 US. Also, check out whatever you can by Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers on RCA. Likewise, Muggsy Spanier's 1939 sides, also for RCA; just about anything by Bix Beiderbecke though his "hits" are on a single disc collection on the Louisiana Red Hot label in wonderfully remastered sound and, of course, The Hot Club of France featuring Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli. Once again, JSP has the goods. They have two four-disc boxes of the HCOF stuff that retail for $21 each. This is great stuff and lots of fun.

Hock, I love Booker Ervin too.

Sigmund. I have a few of those recs. The Hot 5s and 7s is well ...monumental ofcourse. I also have a lot of Jelly Roll. Problematically I don't like the guitar, period. Will try Django, though I've been saying that for years.

Of course, given personal taste. If you like hot stuff, don't hesitate on the Muggsy Spanier. There's also a Wild Bill Davison on Commodore which is incendiary.
