Need Vinyl Help

Posted by: Chayro on 10 December 2006

I am soon to be the proud father of an excellent record player and I am in the process of building a SMALL and select group of new pressings. The criteria is that it has to be music I really love and will want to play over and over through the years. So far, I got:
Brubeck - Time Out
Clapton - Unplugged
Satchmo Plays King Oliver (St. James Infirmary)
Nora Jones - Feels Like Home. (I like it and i'm proud)
Bill Evans/Shelly Manne - Empathy
A Love Supreme - John Coltrane
Simon & Garfunkle - Bridge over Troubled Waters
Carol King - Tapestry
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Roy Orbison - In Dreams
Jim Croce - Greatest Hits
Lambchop - is a woman
Music from Pulp Fiction
Opus 3 Showcase (I like Eric Bibb, but not too much)
The Music Collection Vol I - Naim (Just because)

Anyway - this is the kind of stuff I listen to over and over that I could find on quality vinyl. I regret that some of my favorites do not seem easily available.

Perhaps you can assist by listing some vinyl you have found to stand the test of time and that you listen to at least once a week maybe. Other than large-scale classical and metal, i'm open to most genres. Thank you for your help.

They don't seem to be as comprehensive as they used to be, but you might find some joy at:
Simply Vinyl

Simply Vinyl's 160g and 180g (S160 and S180) are generally a joy in my experience (I have about a dozen - Portishead, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan), and I am delighted to have picked up some slightly off-the-wall stuff very cheaply - the music from The Great Escape and Star Trek for £2 and £3!

I also like to try Diverse Vinyl which has a wide range of stuff at, I think, reasonable prices.

And don't discount Amazon or your local record shop, if you have one.

Thanks. I was sort of hoping for titles of stuff you listen to again and again. Some new ideas, as it were. Musicdirect and Acoustic Sounds have plenty of vinyl - it's just that I can't think of that much I want to listen to repeatedly.

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - everything they recorded
Everything Leonard Cohen recorded, but I continually return to 'Songs Of'

But this doesn't really help you does it?

I don't know. I can't understand a thing you're saying.

Lots of best of's on vinyl from the 50's and 60's often for less than the cd version. If buying used online be sure to only get records rated mint minus or better.

The US pressings sound more dynamic and exciting . Not that I'm biased....

What about the Bobs?
I have all the early Dylan albums and most of Marley's stuff and they all sound great and withstand the test of time.

You're right about Dylan. I have to figure out which ones to buy. Good call.

It looks like you like Mainstream Jazz. There is a great selection of excellent Vinyl reissues on Speakers Corner. They are not cheap but I play them over and over because they have great immediacy and swing. A lot of jazz reissues are Verve recordings. Their Jazz library is pretty much all excellent.

If you try an Ella Fitzgerald recording such as

OR

You may find you play it opver and over but be warned if that hooks you there are all the famous Ella "Songbook" recordings waiting for you discover which will ruin your bank balance.

Did someone find my Phil Spector recommendation offensive, or is it just a case of photo downloading error ?
