AOL Difficulties
Posted by: Richard Dane on 10 December 2003
Unfortunately since AOL updated their mail servers recently we at Naim have not been able to reply to any mails from AOL members as they just get bounced back to us as undeliverable. We have notified the relevant parties and hope that the situation is rectified as soon as possible.
To anybody who is an AOL member and is still awaiting a reply by e-mail from us, we apologise but circumstances are somewhat out of our control at present.

FWIW
I gave up on AOL years ago - a dire experience!

I had a similar experience (my ISP is BTOpenworld) and my mail to AOL users was bounced for almost 4 weeks. Eventually after many complaints to BT the situation was resolved.
Its interesting that AOL seem to get away with this indiscriminate interference with legitimate email traffic, without any penalty.
Had someone been caught doing similar things to the "snail-mail" they'd be languishing in the Tower by now

I have a Compuserve address (which I believe is AOL in disguise) I suppose I can safely assume the AOL effect also applies to Compuserve.
I know for a fact that one person has had variable success sending me e-mails hence my conclusion.
Anybody eles on Compuserve believe this happening to them?

I think it's the other way around. AOL disallow all connections except those in the 'white list'. So you have to ask nicely if you want to send mail to AOL.
Given nobody of consequence uses AOL I don't see it as a big problem.

I agree. If it helps people to realise that "Arseholes on Line" is a software disaster for any computer user, then I'm all for them alienating themselves some more.
Yeah...just don't worry about it.

If you relay through your providers smtp server, then this will get around the problem with AOL. I am assuming that Naim has its own mail server and it is on a subnet that technically 'shouldn't' be running a mail server (ie from a dynamic IP address). You can make a rule on the smtp server which says From:* To:*aol.com relay via: myisp.smtpserver.com This is how we had to get around this problem when our company was on a dynamic IP address. Also check your mail servers smtp logs and it will explain why your mails are bounced.

Just to update everybody - AOL seem to now "allow" e-mails from our host server. Thanks for all your patience and understanding.
