HDX & SuperNait
Posted by: Klout10 on 30 May 2009
Dear forum members,
My current system comprises a CD5x and a SuperNait. I'm considering trading in the CD5x for a HDX, is there anybody who has experience with this combination? From memory, I thought a few of you had this combi??
Any thoughts/opinions on this subject are welcome!
Regards,
Michel

Tempting to think about. Couple of power supplies and you could be done forever.

do it without reservation.

Hi gary1,
I was looking in your profile to find out your current system before making this post! Just out of curiousity: May I ask you why you are using a FlatCap power supply and not HiCap on the SuperNait?
BTW: Will contact my dealer next week to arrange a home-demo. Will let you know...

Prefers the voicing and had a CD5x before the HDX.

js, thank you for your reply. I used to think the general consensus was that a HiCap would suit the SuperNait better, but IIRC there are several users who use the FlatCap2...

Dear Michel,
My CDX2 is replaced by the HDX and this resulted in better stage in the ripped music, more air around the instruments and better bass control. In my room the change was very positive. And of course you easy can find the music of your choice.
The character of the sound is somewhat different: so you have to listen yourself !
My SuperNait is helped by a Hi-Cap and in my opinion that makes a very worthwhile positive difference.
You can make a nice combination with the HDX and create perfection later with the XPS or even the 555 powersupply.
So, try with your own ears !
Paul

Thanks Paul,
My dealer said in his opinion the HDX was better than the CDX2. I've a home demo by the end of the week...

Update: The HDX arrived yesterday!
Installation was something that bothered me last week (I'm no computer expert) but it's really easy. I got it up and running in less than 10 minutes.
Regarding the sound quality I can only say it's really good! I haven't heard the HDX next to a CDX2 (currently, I own a CD5x), but it's absolutely amazing how good it sounds.
Let you know more later...
The only boring aspect is the ripping of my CD collection though...

Michel

I would be curious how the HDX sounds digitally into the supernait, compared to analogue that is.

I haven't been able to try this since I don't have the proper cable to connect the two.
According to Benelux Naim distributor Latham, it doesn't make much sense because the DAC in the HDX is much better than the one in the SuperNait. But again, I haven't heard it (yet!)...

My understanding is that they use the same chipset so they should sound identical.
But they must be implemented differently because they don't sound the same. HDX was more natural sounding and seemed to have a little more flow. This, if I recall, was with bare HDX. Can't remember if SN had HiCap or if I used HiLine or standard DIN-DIN cable. Used DC-1 for SN DAC listening.
Of course an XPS2 or 555PS can be put on the DAC section of the HDX which brings its performance much further ahead of the Supernait.

To quote the last Connection newsletter, page 10:
"The DAC is the same Burr Brown component as used in the SUPERNAIT" - Gary Crocker.
Perhaps the difference in output is due to the attention on the analogue stages... "...the HDX employs analogue output stages derived from the NAC 552 with relay switched RCA and DIN output options."
