Naim Your Nait

First, which Nait is your favorite - and give a reason or two why. Value can be considered here.
Second, cost aside, which Nait performs the best? Is the latest Nait 5 the best?
Here is a listing of Naits to choose from. Let me know if I have missed any.
Nait 1
Nait 2
Nait 3
Nait 3R
Nait 5
I believe there is no Nait 4, at least not that made it to market.
OK Nait lovers, let's have it.

I guessed that 475,-USD would be about the same as 1000,- Dutch guilders. (now 455,- Euro)
(which is the asking price for the Nait-2 at that dealer)
but,..I just came back from www.XE.com
(nice and simple money converter)
where I found out that at this moment 1 USdollar is 1,1 Euro
So,...to make a long story short...
The price of the s/h Nait-2 at the mentioned dealer in Holland wasn't 475,- USD but around 410,- USD!
Not sure if he's prepared to sent it to the states, but on the other hand, why not..
You might wanna give it a try,eh

I reckon the NAIT1 sounds quite different to the rest of the range. Having owned mine from new, I reckon Tony's is sounding very sad. I remember it sounding ruthlessly controlled. Only wish the same could have been said of the 32.5, 43.2, 110, 140, SNAPS & HiCap that followed it in quick succession.
Interesting. My Nait 1 might well be off colour, I strongly suspect it has received a non-Naim service / fix at some point in its life. When I got it I noticed that some of the speaker connectors were loose (a common fault), and to solder them back on means removing the main circuit board, when doing this I noticed that the heads of the allen bolts holding the output transistors down had been rather badly dinged by someone's prior removal attempt. I am sure Naim would have used the right tool!
Unfortunately I could not actually use the Nait 1 in the main system even if it were better as it does not have enough line level inputs for my sources (I have my phono stage, CD, and TV plugged in, and would like at some point to use my tuner). The Nait 1 has a MM stage and two line inputs, the CD Nait has three and a half (the CD input via RCAs sounds crap).
I do plan to get both Naits a full Naim service and recap at some stage. I would actually like to modify the Nait 2 slightly afterwards by replacing the volume pot with a better quality and less sensitive one, so that the normal listening level were at about 10 or 11 o'clock rather than about 8:15! If I do go for some far more efficient speakers than my Kans I imagine the current pot would be pretty much unusable. I also plan to get the CD input sorted out the so its straight through - I could juggle stuff around and use my tuner then.
Tony.
I had the same problem of lack of inputs on my Nait 1 I made an external 4 way switch box using 3 relays, using the NO and NC contacts on two relays for the 4 inputs and the NO and NC contacts on a third to switch between the commons on the first relays, and another relay to handle the tape outs on my VCR and tape all switched by a cheap double pole switch and some diodes to pull the right relays in, it might seem an over the top way to do it but 4 pole 4 way switches are expensive. Its still running now after 5 years, in to my 62 doing the TV VCR DVD and tape inputs sounds fine now its been rewired with CAT5 stranded cable.

Hmmm, electronics speak! Ok, now I have your attention, would swapping the Nait 2 volume pot for one of a different value have the effect I require? I want to make it less sensitive, so a bigger knob movement (oo-err!) is available at lower volumes.
Tony.
PS I still want to take you up on your kind FM3 service offer - its all boxed up and ready to go!
The other option is to reduce the overall gain. That probably requires an expert....
FWIW I've never thought of Kans as being inefficient, whatever the figures say. If I were to plug mine in now I'd be turning the volume control well down for the same subjective volume, albeit I have to use a different power amp but the gains are specified as nominally the same. Curious.

If the Nait uses a cheap carbon pot then it is quite likely that a 'proper' Alps job will be an improvement.
It looks like a pretty cheap pot to my eyes, its a little thing with a pressed metal back, not the big solid plastic block like the Alps in the 32.5. The good thing is that there is a fair bit of room, so I should be able to get a half decent pot in there assuming that it was not so tall that the spindle didn't line up with the hole on the front panel. I would obviously have to run some leads from the circuit board, the current pot is soldered directly to the board.

I agree, they don't seem to need much power to get them to work. The efficiency figures I have seen quoted are really low, I've seen mentions as low as 82-84db. I have owned both Mk 1 and 2 Kans, and the 2s are definitely a little less efficient.

I have no clue whether or not this is the reason (sounds like urban legend), but in Japan, four is definitely unlucky. One pronounciation of four (shi) also means "death". Thus, sake cups, plates, flatware, whatever are almost always sold in groups of five.

Which is precisely the reason the journos at HFC love the stuff. At last Naim is joining the rest of the world etc etc...
Give me the drama (and rough edges) anyday
I think that you're too extreme in you distaste for the Nait 5. I'll agree that all is relative, and I never compared a Nait 5 with any other Nait, but I chose a Nait 5 over other similiarly priced and more expensive products on the market because it delivered the musical message for me.
Peter
Just bought a Nait 1 in, apparently, good shape. Hope to compare it to a Nait 5 at a friends; if I can we'll report the results.
Cheers,
Bob

But not before you get the 1 recapped, right?
Actually, ideally we'll do it twice--once as the Nait 1 is and then after it is recapped.
