What film have you seen recently?

Yes I know there is a 'what DVD have you watched recently?' thread in the home theatre room but there are others ways to watch a film and whoever goes into the home theatre room?
Here is one I watched yesterday at the cinema (JWM would love it - I know I did)
Into Great Silence

Last week I watched David Lynch's new film called ' Inland Empire '. Some say it his masterpiece - I walked out half way through. It is the biggest load of pretentious twaddle I have ever seen in my life - 3 hours of the Emperors new clothes imo.

The last film I saw was "Smokin' Aces".
Loved it. It was exactly what the trailer suggested it would be. I didn't want a particularly sophisticated film and I didn't get one. I got guns, gangsters, funny and interesting characters and a slightly convoluted plot. Oh, and chick-assassins. Yeah.

I have just watched 'The Dualists' on DVD - The special edition which has a commentary by the director Ridley Scott. This was Scott's debut as a film director and it is a stunning achievement - visually one of the most beautiful films ever made with lighting and set design as if by Caravaggio himself, an excellent score by Howard Blake and a cast to die for.

Chick assassins are good value

Keane -- with Damien Lewis. A desperate snapshot of one guy's life.

Watched Adrift yesterday - my girlfriend's choice from the video shop. A story about a bunch of idiots who set sail on a posh yacht. They then all jump in the sea for a swim, but whoops, someone forgot to release the ladder over the side for them get back on again! Panic, arguments and death then ensue. Based on a true story apparently.
Verdict: I'm choosing next time!

Nu, Pogodi!(Just you wait!). Russian animation of around 1970 about a big bad wolf and a sweet rabbit. A nice russian chap brought it for me when he visited.

I saw a free preview screening last night of "Snowcake".
Enjoyed it thoroughly, right to the last second before the credits rolled.

The Last King Of Scotland.Another biography but definitely a first-rate performance (of a dream role admittedly) by Forest Whitaker. Towards the end of the film I would have liked him to look a tad more perverse and dangerous.

On recent flights to/from Luxor:-
Casino Royale couldn't make head or tails apparently i had been cut to blazes and the continuity left a lot to be desired.
Night in the Museum? not too impressed don't think Ben Stiller or Ricky Gervaise are very funny.
Stranger than Fiction looked OK but kept being interrupted.

Yes! I've heard of this! And would love to see it if it ever comes up-country.
So, to my shame, I confess to having gone to see "300" most recently. - Quite different from "The 300 Spartans" ... and Herodotus...

Agreed - I saw it on a recent flight to Kerala. On the flight home to Gatwick, they showed "The World's Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins. A nice "feel good factor" film.

Just watched Saw from the video shop, my girlfriend's choice again. A film about a sadistic serial killer nutter who likes kidnapping people and pitting them against each other for their lives. Meanwhile cops home in on said said nutter only to find that mastermind behind all this is someone else. Really pretty gruesome and not for the faint-hearted, but all in all a good story well told with a fair bit of tension and a lot better than Adrift.
Girlfriend's mate now threatening to lend us Saw 2 and 3!
I really am choosing next time though!

We saw 'Sunshine' this weekend. Enjoyable if desperately implausible '2001esque' space thriller with a bit too much sound and fury and not quite enough suspense but still well worth a trip,. Directed by Danny 'Trainspotting' Boyle.

Little Miss Sunshine last night. Heartwarming ( I know, an overused term if there ever was one. But it is) and f***ing funny to boot!

Unfortunately, I don't get to see movies in a theater very often, so it's Netflix. Some films I've seen recently which I've enjoyed and/or been moved and/or enriched by:
Walk the Line
Little Miss Sunshine
Jesus Camp
40 Year Old Virgin
Babel
The Squid and the Whale
Elizabeth 1 (HBO production with Helen Mirren ... what an achievement to have portrayed both Elizabeths so magnificently, much less in the same year!)
All best,
Fred

Just watched 'Memoirs of a Geisha' - A stunning movie full of gorgeous Chinese actresses playing Japanese Geisha - including my favourite Gong Li pictured below.
Also 'Pierrepoint' a very fine film about Albert pierrepoint a British executioner - a disturbing, thought provoking film with impressive performances and a sutble, superbly written script.

I saw "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" last year. Very hard going, especially when he shot the informer. Thought about the movie for days after seeing it.

Blimey!! My wife has this recorded and it's sitting on the Sky+ box waiting to be watched, but I haven't bothered. I think I might take a look.

Rasher,
Gong Li stars in Curse of the Golden Flower which opens today at your local Odeon. It is by the same director as 'House of Flying daggers' which is a truly stunning film.

Very well made movie of 1953. The book which I read twice as a teenager is excellent too.

Apocalypto Not for the feint hearted perhaps (lots of gore)but a jolly good film with some wonderful moments and well filmed. Mel Gibson directs very ably.
