Naim uniqute. USB disk/stick

Posted by: Menx on 26 November 2010

Hi There!

As a ARCAM devotee, I'm new on the forum.
Yet, are getting into NAIM sound and quality as well as more digital solutions.

Are considering the UNITI or the QUTE (Depending on the sound quality matched with my speakers, GamuT Phi3)

Before making the travel to my dealer for a demo, do have a question that I have been unable to find.

The Uniti/Qute can play music stored on USB sticks. (Limited storage GB). What about smaller USB disks? (@ 100-500GB without power connection)? Any one tried this, or know if psbl or working?

Today play from USB disk through Squeezebox Touch and highly prefer that prior streaming from my computer.

Finally, as new to the iPOD thing to, know that they have the IPOD app for control, sounds brilliant. What are the further good things?
Can you stream music (Let say from USB stick attached) from the UNITI/QUTE to a iPod in your home network?

Thanks from a cold an snowy Sweden!

Brgds,
Christian

Christian,

the use of larger USB storage, i.e. USB disc drives is not recommended. It may or may not work, however a bigger issue is how to navigate the drive. You would have to make a lot of forward and backward skips to find any particluar track.

For all that, music via the USB stick interface is fantastic, especially for hi-res files.

Better by far would be to just plug your SB touch into the DAC via a good quality digital i/c.

As for the iPod, apart from the ability of the DAC to play back music from the 'Pod digitally, if you use an iPod Touch/Phone you could use this as a basic streamer to the DAC. But then, if you already have the SB touch, I think it would probably be best to use that instead and use the iPod Touch/phone as a control device.

Large USD hard drives are not a problem, assuming you have a usable file structure to ease navigation. I tested a 320Gb Lacie 2.5" external drive on my Uniti and it worked just fine. Larger (3.5") HDs will require external power, but will still work.

Hi Menx
I have about 250 cd's in wav format on a portable hard drive, no problems at all with my Uniti.
You can make your own folder/file structure to make navigation easier.
Just make sure the drive is formatted to FAT32.

Thanks for reply!....
Sounds Great!

Then i will bring my disk to
the local dealer for a níce (hopefully) DEMO!

External HDD's should be ok as they have their own power supply.

Portable HDD's however draw power from the USB socket and my Maxtor 320gb drive does not work when connected to the Uniti. I can get it to work by using a USB Y cable and plugging the 2nd USB socket into the laptop to supply more power to the disk.

I`d be very interested in knowing which one - Qute or Uniti - you prefer even if you decide not to buy either. I have never heard them but the GamuT Phi3 look good. Thanks!

? How can you use an iTouch as a streamer? I'm assuming you mean using it to stream files from somewhere else wirelessly? It seems that whenever I attach either an iPhone or iTouch into the USB input it captures the player and I can not control it beyond the file structure that is the music stored. Am I missing a trick here?

Nagoya,

Will keep you posted.
I will have the Qute home for a DEMO this weekend on test from my local dealer.
The GamuT Phi are some what a decent and heavy load to drive. Its going to be interesting to see if
the qute is up for it! Smile Given some though, i would not go for the UNITI to have the additional 20w as i
dont need the CD function. Then i would rater save up for a XS. Yet, normaly only listen to low/medium volume, strongly belive the qute will coop with the speaker, however mor interesting if the sound will apply and trigger my senses.

Real,

You need PlugPlayer installed on the iPod. Then you must use a UPNP Server somewhere. The server could be another instance of PlugPlayer, Foobar, JMRC, UnitiServe, HDX etc...

You simply go into Plugplayer on the iPod, and tell it which server to use, and which renderer to use (the iPod itself). It will find all possible UPNP servers and Renderers on your wifi network.

Well, now i have had the Qute home for the weekend on a demo! To sum-up my impression, WOW! How can this little box sound so good!?
Honnestly, today i have a ARCAM DIVA 85 and its dsnt sound as engaging, and even full range powerfull and articulated as the quet. Yes, bringing the volume to HIGH (to high for naighburs non the next street) it loses controll and dist´s. Yet, its one charming pice. As i´m new to the NAIM sound, im more than blown away and offer a totally new soundstage compared to the ARCAM. The Quet with its limited power spec dident show any problems in driving my GamuT PHi3 Speakers with excelent result!....

The only thing now holding me from making it a absolute deal, is the problem it has to drive my 320GB, 2,5 external HardDisk. Dont know why..? The HDX managed so maybe its just to power consuming.
My dealer are to finde one working!

Any one here that can recomend a portable (non powered) external HardDrive @ around 320-500GB?

This Qute realy is a Steal at its price/functionality and sound!

Hello Menx

It's quite a little box of tricks isn't it. I think most of us found it unexpectedly good; why we should have I'm not sure, price I suspect.

Would it not be possible to connect to a network and stream to it? It is very, very good used in this way. This would also enable use of the iRadio tuner of course, should this be of interest.

Hope it works out for you.

Regards
Peter

I would *STRONGLY* suggest that you do not do this - paralleling up two separate power supplies is really not a good idea at all.

The Uniti And UnitiQute are not intended to be used with USB hard discs and we cannot warrant that it will drive non-powered drives but the navigation will work in the same way as a USB pendrive or memory stick - it should be noted though that as the folder structures that you are navigating get larger then it is likely that speed of navigation will be adversely impacted.
