Technically yes, there would be no problem, though in my opinion it would not be the best thing to do. If you want a bigger and more powerful sound then start at the front and work backwards. When you get to the totally maxed out LP12 / CDS2 / 52 / 135 level, then it may be time to add a sub (some people would insist you go active first though!). IMHO only REL are worth considering if you do think about subs.
Tony.
What you suggest is to add a lot of money to the system, I'm looking for a shortcut...

What I meant was that if you were to think of the budget for a good sub, say a thousand pounds, that money would sound better used further up the chain. Assuming your LP12 is a good 'un I would use the money to swap the 102 for a second hand 82. The 82 is a far more 'wide bandwidth' pre than the 102, and will amongst other things give cleaner and deeper bass. At every upgrade point the thousand pounds earmarked for the sub could be better used up front (until you are maxed out) - I was not suggesting you rush out and buy a CDS2 etc!

Are you serious?
I wanted to photoshop a fictional Naim sub with isobaric'd SBL drivers, aluminium sleeve extrusion and detuned NAP135 onboard, but now I don't need to

After hearing DBL's with what, a 15" woofer and still sounding lean (but fast) I can only guess what a Naim sub is going to sound like.
Having deep, full, rich, bass extended bass on a Naim speaker is about as likely as the Taliban advocating women's rights.
I remain optimistic though.

'tis true. Although aimed at the AV market, I'm sure it may find one or two applications in the SBL sector

How do you connect a sub, does it slave off of a speaker or do you take anoter lead from wone of the channels?
I know they saytat bass can't be 'sourced' but won't slaving off one speaker chuck the balance out?
A sub can be directly connected to your hi cap from the terminal next to the one used to connect it to the power amp..I've a M&K sub set up with my system & it needed plenty of trial & error when both positioning & setting levels but after lenghty burning in seems just fine

Don't do this!
It's reckoned to degrade the performance of the main system considerably.
cheers, Martin
However, the latest copy of Listener magazine has a review of four different subwoofers--the Linn Sizmik (sp?), a Spendor, the REL Stadium (I think its the Stadium) and the Hsu Research. Art Dudley, the author, starts the review by candidly sharing his reservations and past not-so-good experience with subwoofers. Bottom line summary on the review is that subwoofers have come a long way from the old days and worked well in his system. A pretty positive review for whatever it is worth.
I only mention the above review because,1) I just read it and 2) his views differ somewhat from some of those in this thread. And thats the whole point of this conference, isn't it?

RE sub to hi cap; the connection method I described was suggested by the Naim people themselves when I e-mailed them!
PS the 82 sounds great!...
cheers Thomas
