Best Exhaust Note?

Blame Bruce - the thread was his idea, but it had to be done.
My vote is for the Ferarri 355 - just before it redlines in second gear - preferably going through a tunnel.
I recall that JC once described the sound off the 355 like being chased by a very large dog - inside the mouth of an even larger shark
V twin motor cycles can also make some nice noices, the Ducati desmo engines for example.

Perhaps not best, but noisiest is my italjet dragster scooter with expansion pipe. Took it for an MOT last year and the tester failed it immediately on starting it. Said he would be struck off if he passed it. Sounds like a machine gun.

Rotary Mazda full chat at dawn on a misty June morning down the Mulsanne (having snuck past the Gendarmes) c.1984 was pretty spectacular.

Mine's a 1380cc, running a 48mm throttle body (fuel injection), sw5i cam, big valve head and a stainless steel RC40 single box system.
Factor in the solid mounted front subby which turns the whole bodyshell into the engine's own personal speaker and you have what looks like a standard production mini of its' vintage, but goes like a scalded cat.
Glad to see other mini folk in here!

My gorgeous 1973 Norton Commando 750 parallel twin at any speed! Twin Amal carbs, standard exhaust pipes were straight through. No modern bike sounds like it. Sold it to help finance our first house...of course I never recorded it - too busy cruising around at much to high speed...

The best engines i've heard in my life time are twin napier 18 cylinder two stroke deisel engines as fittied to the legendary deltic locomotives of the 1950s, hence class 55s.
They were nicknamed drones or lancaster bombers, truly magnificent sound!
At 700rpm they rumbled like thunder!
(1650 bhp each)

west end london 1pm start: 3 pints of guinness (extra cold, preferably), 2 packets of cheese and onion crisps, late lunch consisting 1 mixed kebab with ring-stinger hot sauce and a deep-fried mars bar; afternoon chaser to cool off - two pints of cafferys (you guessed it, there's a storm brewing now), a half a chinese stir fry (ohhh, the cabbage), can of coca-cola (non-diet, full fat non-decaf) - activates the mars bar for depth-charge, and a 30 metre descent into the london underground system (pressure change).

PS - I'd never consume the above list... I'm not sure if it can be filed under "recipe" or "challenge". whatever, it's more or less guarenteed to bring you a result.

I bought a TVR Griffith 500 on the basis of the noise alone. That was a mistake, as it turned out to be hade from chocolate, hairgrips and gaffer tape. Having sold it 10 months later and lost the national debt of a small South American country in the process, I shan't be making the same mistake again.
I used to own a 3 litre Scimitar (Ford Essex engine) which sounded much better than you'd think. Tremendously satisfying rumble with stainless downpipes.
After the British built debacle I turned to the East and currently have a Subaru P1. The boxer engine is pleasant enough and the turbo whistle and accompanying boot in the back are fun.
The accolade for best sound has to go to the Koeniggsegg V8. Good lord - time for a new mortgage? Hmmm.

Things dont change re TVR build quality. I was behind a newish Tuscan in traffic yesterday and the shut line on the bood lid was about 25mm on one side and 5 mm on the other.
Nice paint job though.

The lambo at the begingin of "Traveling without Moving" by Jamiroqui sounds quite cool, it sounds like it is recorded from inside the car, as it is quite muffled and you can hear the clack of the gear change.

Matt - think I covered those with the Merlin comment
Though after a go in Hammerhead's new toy at the weekend, I might reconsider...!

Sorry everybody, there's only one answer to this. You haven't lived until you have heard a top fuel dragster firing up! A truly awesome and (literally) ground shaking experience. 7 or 8 thousand horsepower and 0 to 100mph in around 0.8 of a second has to be seen to be believed.
I had my first experience of this in around 1973, when Dennis Priddle put in a demo run at the Brighton Speed Trials, and I have been hooked on the sport ever since. I'll be at Santa Pod next weekend for the FIA European Championship Finals. Anybody else going?
Chris

Another vote for the Merlin engine...
Back on the road though it'll have to be a race spec Aston Martin 6 of either variety (W.O or Marek)...
The A-M V8 is also wonderful but too brutal and you never forget it's a V8... The 6 though is, as someone else on this thread rightly commented, perfect....
Failing that, the 2.7 Carrera engine I had in my '73 911S never failed to make the hairs on my neck prickle...

The mixer turning bricks and water to clean it after a hard days work and everything ready for tomorrow. also bacon frying, gives alternative results, followed with an egg crusty roll with brown sauce... what a sound, as well as you know? when you are least expected.
