Nime,

Nime,

Now that's what I call good TV. Gates is the prince of darkness and virus writers his acolytes. Bug writers are buggers. The annoying thing is when of the little creeps succeeds in infecting the globe like the filipino who wrote the 'I love you' virus (commonly known as the 'love bug') he was offered a fat job in the states, he should have got the electric chair.

I wouldn't use Norton AV on my Mac it has a bad track record. Last year Symantec admitted that a serious security flaw has affected about 40 of their products, including all versions of Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) for OS X. Symantec called this a 'high risk' vulnerability that could allow a remote user to gain control of a Mac. It may have been fixed by now, but I'm not taking that chance.

I've found the Mac performs much better without Norton AV. The program Garyl recommended, clamVX, is much safer and it's free, and it doesn't consume large amounts of resources.

I was a senior Lotus Notes Administration consultant at Symantec in Dublin and I would not use Norton is it was free!!

If Bill Grates wasn't a white American he would be in Guantanamo Bay.

Have a look at just what Bill and Melinda are doing witrh their time and please tell me again why you think he or they should be Guantanamo Bay?

As most will know I am an apple fanboy, but its probably fair to say there is not another single individual in the world who gives more and does more for the betterment of the underprivlaged as Gates.

I'm always willing to be persuaded and I was never one to let becoming informed get in the way of a grudge.

Is this the same Bill Grates who's agressive, monopolistic blackmailing of computer manufacturers has denied much of the third world affordable operating systems and thus access to the internet and all its health and educational benefits?

Is this the same Bill Grates who has been fined a record amount by the EU and faces ongoing daily massive fines unless his army of lawyers can tone down the terms somehow?

Is this the same Bill Grates from whom nobody on earth (except perhaps his own wife) would buy a secondhand car? At least not without an armed security escort and full complement of mechanics trailing along behind in a slow convoy in the smoke belching from the rattling old banger?

Is this the Bill Grates who puts greed above the vulnerability of the entire world's industrial system thanks to the holes shot-through his operating system?

What he does with our money in his leisure time seems almost tame in comparison with his technological "crimes against humanity".

Or were you taking about another Bill Grates? Winker

I'm with Nime 100% on this, Gates only does things to deflect attention from his business practice. I've always wondered how he made a fortune selling third rate products. Confused

We are talking about the Bill Gates who does indeed takes money from those who follow his thinking and pay to use his products, he then distributes a portion of the takings to The tax man, the shareholders and hischaritable foundation. While others such as Ubuntu address the computing and software needs of those who do not follow Bill's path.

I would like to suggest that from the mid 80s onwards he and Apple placed a lot of pcs on a lot of peoples desks, was that the wrong thing to do? I think not as it allowed software makers all across the globe to create software and raise the educational standards of local staff so as to create a pool of educated employees. I think this is what happened in India and is happening in China and South Korea.

IIRC he is answerable to laws both in the US and the EU but if you feel the laws lack teeth then get them changed rather than moaning that Bill has better lawyers then the US or EU lawmakers.

I can't quite remember how long unix has been around but with linix offering and free opensource packages I think the software houses that write packages just for the microsoft operating system are the ones supporting Bill and adding to his wealth. Business could switch to open source products (China, South Korea and India are plus a few more but a few) then they will then be free of Bill and his software. It is up to them to walk away.

I wonder does an Indian mother who has seen all of her children given protection against polio paid for by Bill's foundation give a toss about the quality of his product? I expect not. I also expect that she is rather pleased that someone has offered a helping hand to her and her children. I feel that right to moan about the way he conducts business or the quality of his products is something that is encouraged in the areas of the world not needing help from his foundation. Those needing help have life and death type things to worry about and are only too happy too accept help offerd in his name by the foundation Smile .

Anyone that thinks Bill Gate's massive charitable donations are purely motivated by personal greed is very clearly an idiot.
Posted on: 23 February 2006 by Guido Fawkes
As Mr Zimmerman said

But nobody has any respect
Anyway they already expect you
To just give a cheque
To tax-deductible charity organisations

Dedicated to the many independent software companies that are no longer trading and the employees who used to work for Word Perfect - 4.1 on the Amiga is still my favourite way to write documents (though I'm quite happy with vi and nroff)

Wonder who initiated the Mac virus ....

With PCs the processing power is stuck on the users' desks and 95% of it does little more than contribute to office pollution - it wasn't me who first said this, it was a well known business man, but he has a point.

The fact is business, individuals, everyone has had a choice from the very inception of the personal computer.

The fact you all chose Windows is your own damn fault, it does not detract from the fact Gates does a shit load for worth while causes and without doubt gives more moeny and aid then anyone else walking the planet toady.

The simple choice is, if you don't like the business practises then don't use windows...

Cue:

"My business uses it, I have to.."
"It has software I need to use" i.e 'I have not researched.'
"Everyone else uses it therefore I have too.."

etc etc

Apple's business practices and protectionism are at least as objectionable, but it's not as obvious because it's a much smaller company.
Posted on: 23 February 2006 by garyi
Agreed, they are all crunts.

Not my experience - having dealt professionally and as a consumer with both. Not true of Sun either. I can only speak from personal experience - Apple and Sun treat me as an important developer (even though my work is very small scale), whereas Microsoft treated me and my customers like dirt.
