Naim with Tube CD Player

Posted by: king on 06 March 2002

Does anyone here owns a Tube CD Player with Naim?

A freind recommended Jolida CD Player which runs a tube output stage. I heard it on other system and it was beautiful. Warm, big, and very very analogue.

This could be my next step from my Marantz now. wink

Thanks James,
I'm looking for a used CD3 but seems like it a hot item that no one wants to part with.
I'm running a modified VPI HW19 with Dv10x4 now, but CD player is soon to be my main source as software for turntable is getting less here.

Apart from Jolida, PLanet and Rotel is also on the card, and budget is a main issue here.

Cheers.

Does anybody know about Conrad Johnson or the AMC tube-CDPs?

I used an Audio Note CD-2 for a spell -- it was fantastic. One tube in the output stage. Regret selling it actually.

A relatively cheap CD player with a valve output stage is the Njoe Tjoeb 4000. Detail are at

My Nait 2 is currently driving my new Njoe Tjoeb 4000 which I bought with the upgraded power cord and E88CC tubes. I'm hopefully at the tail end of burning it in. I hearing a noticeably extended treble, a tighter bass and a soundstage that is much greater than my Sony ES208. Here's the url for the review that sold me.

There are also bunches of favorable reviews on audioreview.com. After two days of just being turned on, I decided that perhaps I'd be able to hurry up the process if I burned in the curcuits with some music so I double clicked the repeat button which is how one sets the program to repeat an entire disc and I let it rip. I've played a variety of stuff in the ensuing five days. Big band, modern symphonies and small group jazz. All with the most bits I could find. I don't know if that mattered though I figured that I'd try for the most bang for the buck.

Initially, Gillian Welch's first album and one of my wife's favorites, was unlistenable. *Way* too forward, edgy and instantly fatiguing. With the cd player's volume all the way up, set at 20, it's noticeably less awful after a week though I can't listen for long. I've turned down the volume on the cd to 14 and that seems to make a real difference.

More to follow.

I'm researching replacements at upscaleaudio.com, at Joe's Tube Lore through audioasylum's tube page and with a couple of maven friends. I'll keep you posted. Right now I'm running the stock Philips' JANs which are militry grade and sound very good, so far. I read on Joe's Tube Lore that they get noisy quickly which I have yet to verify.

Hi King
I used to have a Teac transport running into an AudioNote DAC2 Signature. This fed into my then 32.5 then 250. I used this for about 5 years happily and then tried a CD5. The comparison was night and day in the CD5's favour.
The valve output stage of the DAC2 did give a warm open sound but compared to the CD5, it had very limited bandwidth and was particularly weak on lower frequencies.
I think that much will depend on the rest of your system and the sound balance that you prefer.
Good luck
