Segovia EMI question.

This year EMI released a budget priced three cd set of his works which seem to include the two Great Recordings of the Century cds from 1927 - '39 and some HMV stuff from '49. Much of it is remastered post-'88 when the original two GRotC were first released.

Has anyone heard this new set and compared it for sound with the above mentioned two discs? Thanks.

If the same GROTC remaster is used then those discs will not be different. EMI would not make a new remaster for a budget issue ...

As for the later recordings it is quite possible that they will not match the quality of the earlier ones, as it is entirely possible that the original wax-cut based metal parts were destroyed as they may have been subjected contempory tape transfers for LP release.

These will have the disadvantage of the inherently slightly noisy surfaces [which modern transfer techniques would have made insignificant, but early fifties transfers did not] combined with the fact that early tape recording was not short of its own problems.

If the original metal parts for masters survive, then the late recordings will be as good as the earlier ones ...

If you are a Segovia fan, then don't waste any time. Just get them. They will be as a fine as the remaining master parts, and modern transfer techniques allow for ...
