There is an excellent Italian restuarant which used to be called the Ponte Vechio on the Brompton road about half a mile from the exhibition centre. It changed its name a few years ago. The food is top notch.

It is slap bang opposite of the Colherne pub which is well known for being a gay S&M haunt. I once went in there by mistake with my wife. We didn't stay long but the Ponte Vechio was excellent.

The Brompton road is littered with Indian restuarants.

Not Indian or Italian, but a Turkish restaurant, that a friend and I always go to after gigs in West London.

I have just spoken with him, and it is possible it has closed, but if it is still there one of my very favourite places to eat in London.

'Best Mangal', horrible name, looks dreadful, but serves fantastic food. The front is a kebab house, but behind that is a place to sit and eat, where they serve traditional Turkish food. Mangal is an open brick barbecue on which the meat is cooked. They serve mezzes, houmus, but the chicken and lamb kebabs are fantastic.

Not a place to go for a first date, but full of families, a little cramped, but friendly, and healthy and wonderful tasting food.

I will be sad if it has gone.

A couple of links from a web search.

Don't let the appearance put you off, once you are in the back it is (was) a friendly family restaurant.

If you do try 'Best Mangal' or even pass by the address, please let me know if it is still there.

I might be in London in a few weeks time, so I will probably check myself anyway. I haven't eaten there for a couple of years, and it is way too long.

I should also have pointed out that the kebabs I mentioned are the healthy barbecued slices of meat, and not the lumps of fat and gristle in a donner kebab. I did use the word healthy, which would definitely not apply to a donner.

Dear Jamie,

Thanks for the help. Unfortunatly, my plans have changed so I will not be staying in Earls Court. So sorry I won't be able to report back.

Best Mangal is alive and expanding. In addition to the first restaurant South of the A4 on North Road, there is now Best Mangal 2, just North of the A4, still on North Road, and Best Mangal 3 will open before long.

When I was in London last week I went to the original one, and the food was as fantastic as ever.

They also now have a website: http://www.bestmangal.com

If you are ever around Earls Court (for gigs, etc.) the restaurants are about 10 minutes walk away. If you are at Queen Club is West Kensington, it is even nearer.

Happy eating.
