Rega RB300 Arm for Ariston 11E Turntable

Posted by: The Shrike on 17 January 2004

My father is wanting to get a secondhand Rega RB300 arm for his Ariston 11E turntable. The main reason for this is that the present arm, which is the original one supplied with the turntable, has a detacheable headshell.

Whilst I agree that this change should be good move, can anyone advise if this would require a new arm board, and if so, where could could we get one in the UK?

Many thanks for your replies.

You could try the guys at Origin Live (ask for Mark Baker)- they specilaise in "hotrodding" the Rega arm and using it in various applications - they may be able to assist or point you in the right direction etc .

Their web address - www.originlive.com

I have used them previously (I got my turntable there) and can reccomend them .

Let us know how you get on .

Good luck

Shrike,

Is the Ariston 11E any relation to the RD11? I used to have one of these with 2 concentric rubber rings on the outer platter for record support. This turntable had much in common with the Linn LP12 and back in about 1980 when I wanted to fit a new arm to it, my dealer simply acquired an LP12 arm board, drilled a single mounting hole in the centre and a couple of recessed holes underneath for alignment.

Good plan Pete - I know for a fact that Origin Live Sell an LP 12 armboard fo a rega arm - £23 - perhaps that is appropriate Shrike ?

Hi,
The ariston RD11 "E" is a very different deck to an RD11. The RD11 is basically a 1st generation LP12 clone, whereas the RD11E is a clone of the Fons series 1. This deck has a small round armboard at its rear, and electronic speed switching, complete with pitch controls. There is an armless one on ebay at the moment, by the way. The original arm was the Linn LVV/ADC type s shaped item and a RB250/300 (or Linn Akito) should be much better... Allthough I doubt you will find a new armboard as Ariston are sadly no longer

Ok, so we've established, with help from davewarehouse, that my Dad's turntable, being an Ariston RD11E, is quite different from the RD11.

The RD11E has a round armboard, which my Dad has confirmed being the case with his.

The question is - is this round armboard the same as the RD11 and LP12 armboards?

'Cos if not, it looks like he's stuck....

Many thanks for the interest in this developing mystery!!!

No it isn't. Can't you make one out of MDF?

Hello again,
The Linn LP12/RD11 armboard is rectangular, around 4 inches wide (guess?) and runs the full length of the deck ie more than 12 inches! The RD11E armboard is about the circumference of the top of a pint glass. As you say, not interchangable! Might be worth re-drilling, or even filling with car body filler and starting afresh...The old ADC type arm may have even used the universal mount (often referred to as the Linn mount) but my memory has faded and I can't remember-
