CD5 misreading cd's
Posted by: Theo on 30 August 2002
My CD5 misreads some of my cd's. After closing the door, the CD5 spins the disc and a few seconds later I hear a typical sound ("clunk") , after which the display gives no track numbers.
What is the cause and cure?
- puck?
- cleaning cd?
- ?

Hi Theo,
the bad news is the CD5 just won't accept some damaged discs, while other, less sensitive CDPs will.
However there is a kind of disc with a rather thin, transparent centre Naim doesn't like too much. Particularly Teldec / Warner and affiliated labes uses this make a lot.
In those cases it helps to paste some cellotape ("plakband") in a cross over the centre, and cut out the hole again. This way the puck gets a little more grip on the (thicker) centre.
It is a hassle, I agree.
I saw you use VDHul First Ultimate. When I compared it with Nordost Blue Heaven in my (second) system VDH sounded a tad duller.

If the CD5 used to read the cds in question then its likely to be the puck, bite the bullet and buy a new one, they are about 20 quid.

I have no idea whether it is a recommended practice or not.
On the underside of the puck there are 3 rubbery 'things'. after use it gets kind of flat. You can squeeze to make them round again. It works for me sometimes.

Hi Theo
My virtually brand new CDX does exactly the same, so perhaps it is unlikely to be a worn puck.
With me it happens mainly, but not solely, with Naxos CDs. I have noticed that sometimes it will happen with a CD that previously has played normally. Interestingly it happened on a CDX demo I had at a dealers too so it does not seem to be unusual.
In my case it only happens rarely so I have not got too concerned about it as yet. Though if it persists I would certainly want it dealt with under the warranty in due course.
Downwards pressure on the CD often cures it but I doubt that this is a good thing so I only apply any pressure very gently. More a case of making sure the CD is properly seated really.
I shall watch with interest to see what advice you get from others.
Cheers

Herman,
The Nordost sounded indeed more dynamic and a little brighter than the VDH, which sounded more relaxed and darker. In my system I needed that little "duller" sound.
But this was all before I got my CD 5 and an old Philips did the job.
Now the standard Naim is the interconnect. My dealer offered to remake the VDH withe DIN connectors to fit the Naim. I still doubt whether I'll take that opportunity.

Theo, how come you are a 'Somebody' and everyone else is a 'Member' or 'Novice Member'?

Because of his body, naturally.
