A question on cabling

Posted by: Matthew T on 11 April 2002

I am currently working on building a power distribution block, soldered connections, star earthered, one fuse for the system etc, etc.

The remianing link is what mains cable I should run. I have noticed that Naim use Pirelli cable (not sure which one though), I guess it is the 1mm2 variety (running at 10amps max) certainly not shielded. Is this the best cable or would there be benefits using shielded cable or would the extra capacitance formed between earth and live be determental to the transformers etc. I was also considering using higher gauge wire then 1mm2, possibly 2.5mm2 or 4mm2 which would give much lower resistance (and reduced capacitance between various conductors) and having seen the comments on upgrading spurs from 6mm2 to 10mm2 or even 25mm2! this would seem to make good sense.

Still has to run through a tiny fuse wire though!

Your input much apprecaited.

cheers

Matthew

Richard,

I don't have the luxury of messing around with consumers units as I am in a rented room, certainly will have more fun when I get my own place, eventually!

Always found it strange that Naim used IEC connectors at the back of there equipment rather directly wired cable, costs savings seem unlikely, maybe it is he whole CE rating thing.

cheers

Matthew,

indeed, it must be more expensive to run it this way.

I have a nine-way hydra running my system, which would not be possible with captive leads, so it's swings-and-roundabouts in some ways.

I have been told that it's best to use standard Naim cable, although i would use the shortest length possible for your configuration.

cheers, Martin
