No need to worry.
I have every confidence that your discerning partner will say:-
"It sounds and looks so much better - worth every penny"
OK; back to the real world!
Lie - "I've had the 140 re-cased for £50".
Grovel - "Would you like me to buy you something for a similar amount darling"?

Go for the divorce, this is HiFi we're talking about here!

Its amazing what re-casing/internal upgrades will do! E.g. my hi-cap got re-cased into a Supercap2 and my old Meridian 202/207/209 CD player went through a minor sex change to a CDX/XPS and then a minor internal surgery to a CDS3/XPS2.
Wonders will never seize. My preamp soon needs upgrading to a NAC552 with a NAP500 power supply! From a 12S-never notice the difference…?
Just say Naim is the new black-she will understand?
My name is taken from lowest region of the world, a dank, gloomy pit, surrounded by a wall of bronze, and beyond that a three-fold layer of night; it is one of the first entities to exist in the universe; primarily the prison for defeated gods and a place of punishment for sinners-just like my sense of humour!

The fact that you've gone behind her back will put a bigger rift between you than the fact you have spent a fairly hefty sum of money that (she thinks) you may or may not be able to afford.
Lying to or deceiving your woman is bad karma.
Regards,
Steve.

And the implication of ownership isn't?

Steve,
Never went behind her back. My hi-fi is a series of "black boxes" in the corner.
Point 2: agreed if I can afford it and it does not cause any matromonial conflict, she has the equivalent in capital. i.e - house, car, blood, each time I buy something new.
Solid State-back to you...!

Tell her that boys must have their toys. For some its Hi Fi and for some its a mistress.
Graham.
Not a lad any longer and not from London!

How about I say my dealer installed it "by mistake" ?!!
Of course I am going to tell her , its all about timing - like when shes good and drunk and wont remember it!!! - just joking of course!!
I am being a little tounge in cheek really (in the interests of attempting to spark of a lively forum debate!) cos she "knows im gonna do it sometime, and doesnt mind" - it just I havnt confirmed it first , and I will get some grief. But then , should I HAVE to ask permission - its my dosh
In a way I was trying to find out what excusus other Naim addicts had come up with to justify their illicit purcahses . Speaking personally , I have changed record decks without saying a word , and this hasnt been noticed......

You've asked and answered your own question.
Laugh? I nearly cried.

No you don't ask permission you just tell her what you intend to do.

In the past nine months I've replaced my C.A.L. Aria cd player with a CD3.5. A FC2 followed shortly after. My Nac32/Snaps was replaced by a 202/Hicap a few weeks later and a 250ii arrived not long after. In October the CD3.5 went in favour of a CD5 which was replaced this month, for my 50th birthday, by a CDX2/XPS2. All this to my system which is on full view in our living room, and without any comment from my dear lady other than that her Katie Melua Cd sounded particulary good.
She's obviously as bright as a 2 watt light bulb.
Or maybe I'm lucky enough to have found a wonderful woman who not only tolerates my excesses but also loves the sound of good music.
Tell her if that works best. Don't tell her if that works best.
