FT: Clicked on classics, some classical music web sites

David Bowen says,

"I have been doing culture this week - a note from a web company asking me to look at its new Georg Solti site sent me diving into the world of orchestras and opera houses. I was surprised how active they were".

Just thought this would be of intrest to others.

Well, his remarks about the Vienna Phil are a bit silly. Yes it is virtually impossible to get a subscription seat; same goes for the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. That doesn't mean however you can't go the a VPO concert. But you have to be physically there to get that ticket (and to hear the concert). It's just the way these ol' world cookies crumble. And the websote is useful. Recently I tracked some decades-old concerts on their site. Also, it just so happens it's the very best orchestra in the entire world. They don't have to wear themselves out to be accessible; everybody is dying to get access anyways. So they concentrate on the music making.

Yes the Solti website is really excellent. I sent the link on to a teacher of mine to show her class in Flash. He was a really incredible conductor and it's nice to be honored in this way.

LA Phil
here's another one, my local source of classical and Esa-Pekka Salonen is really great expecially with contemporary music. Also, they have info on the new Gehry designed concert hall. I should credit Mrs. Disney but I just hate to somehow, tho she did give a shitload of money to get it started and pushed others to dig deep(I think guilt and shame were used in abundance because Bilbao was desiogned after and built before ours). I'm really looking forward to the opening next year. I read that after the square box of the administration was put in no two steel beams were the same. This should be a remarkable hall, hope the acousitcs work out well. Prices are up but it's a more intimate hall than what we have now.

Herman & Glenn;
Many thanks for your lucid and informative postings. I agree with Glenn that “guilt and shame” often have pride of place in the funding of artistic projects. Thanks again for the reviews, I hope others will add their comments to this thread.

Maybe not exactly classical, but

www.philipglass.com

is worth a go, chiefly for the ingenious & bewildering IBM sponsored 'Glass Machine' which allows you to listen to Phil's stuff based on variables like intensity of diddle, age etc. Lots of unreleased stuff there too.
