Return to electronica, Upbeat

Posted by: garyi on 27 May 2003

Well Nick has started a nice thread, and nothing pleases me more than the phat beats of modern electronica and breaks 'n' beats.

So down tempo for his thread, rock 'ard this side.

On my plate these past few months:

Funki Porcini: the ultimately empty million pounds. This album rocks, very big phat beats, with some nice scrathes as typified by the ninja label.

Deadly Avenger: Deep red. I think this album is superb, big string sections mixed with 'cinematic' bass lines.

Red Snapper: Our Aim Is To Satisfy. By no means a perfect album in my opinion, but has some of the nice brain melting consistancy you would expect with heavy electronica.

Red Snapper: Making bones. Havn;t heard this too much yet, but its better than the above one, but both are worth the monkies.

Cinematic Orchesta: Every day. I know I take every opportunity to mention this, but really you shoul dhave it by now, visit the website www.cinematicorchestra.com

So in the world, of phat beats, electronica and other weirdtrees what have you been buying, I get a raise soon so will have money to throw about.

nice.

Fog - Ether Teeth
It is to the eponymous debut what 'Push the button' was to 'Mark's keyboard repair'. It has a melancholy feel to it, even bitter in places. I think it would appeal to people who like The Microphones or the Elephant 6 stuff as much as it will Ninjatune's usual customers. 'What a day day' is closest to this album's 'Pneumonia', with the Kid Koalaesque deck trickery and catchy vocals.

Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher
It's somwhere between what Nightmares on Wax's last album would have been if he'd retained the electro edge of 'Word of Science', what Mark Bell's stuff would sounded like if he was transported back to the early 70's, and what a Dan Nakamura produced Misteeq album would be like. In short, it's soulful electro, and it's a must have.

cLOUDDEAD - Peel Session
Further out there than the album, and even more lo-fi. Dose et al do their hyper-rap over samples of street noise, 8-bit game sounds, and wobbly pitch tapes of themselves messing about with their gear. I need to give it a few more listens, but the first few plays have been fun.

Has anyone bought Draft 7.30 by Autchre yet? I've been listening to it on MP3s for a while, and like what I can hear.
