Grilled!!!

Home today sick (cough cough) and having a play with my Allaes.

These are coming on song now, BTW, mucho better than the out-of-the-box sound. The sound is filling in - no more hole between the bass and the upper midrange Smile And Naim's minimum distance of 4" from the wall works for me as well. Putting the speaker closer than that gave peaky bass and added a resonance in the vocal range.

But to the topic...

I had the grilles off today for the first time and was really getting on with them. Even dusted off "Freebird" and had a dance around the living room - gawd, I felt like a high school kid again :::sniff:::

Then I put the grilles back on. Not bad mind you, but a definite sense that things don't sound as "real" or "free" as with the grilles on.

So...anyone have ideas on how to improve on the stock grilles??? With a toddler about and the speakers in the living room, I need grilles so going topless isn't an option.

Foam grills ala SBL/DBL would be better. I once experimented with foam grills on my NBLs and the effect was transforming. There is some magic with the foam...can't explain. It just sounds right.

70's Wannabe!!!

Wow - I can go to Radio Shack and get the SAME foam grilles I used in High School - the ones with ridges cut up/down and side/side to make squares. This is turning in to quite a 'retro' trip.
