NDAC USB Stick Problem

Posted by: Lewy on 29 June 2010

Hi all

I have a problem with 4 (FOUR) new USB stocks from 4 different manufacturers.

These are alien, Kingston, PNY and cheap unbranded.

My original generic USB stick would not work so I purchased 4 new ones of different brands today.

None of these work in any USB port on my NDAC.

When I insert any Ipod, Nano, Classic, etc, no problem, works fine every time.

USB sticks fully formatted with FAT32 and MP3 files in root of drive (e.g not in a folder).

Anyone have any idea?

Kind regards

Lew

WAV only..... MP3s will only play through USB via an approved Apple device.

Not that I have any wish to play MP3 files via nDAC, but why did Naim not include it this basic bit of functionality? After all, the MP3 decoders must be there to enable iPods/iPhones etc to play that format - albeit possibly built into supplied Apple software?

It is not basic functionality, it requires decoders and therefore embeded software to play mp3. WAV is easy, it is just PCM plus headers, so they only need to strip off the headers and play the remainder as PCM-data.

The iPods/iPhones play the mp3 inside the iPod/iPhone itself where it is converted into PCM and only the digital PCM output is sent to the DAC.

Oh. So, if you use wav. files on your iphone and put it into the nDAC, is the quality the same as wav. on USB stick? Just curious, as I can't be bothered to try it for myself, as I already find USB stick less good than my DVD5 as a source into the nDAC, not to mention the very limited interface for USB stick as source.

Rich,

For super hi-res files it is a viable option as most devices are limited to 24/96. Some like the Hiface are 24/192, but most toslink converters are 24/96 max.

I should imagine there is a wealth of hires plinky plonk piano and dreary womens voices we are all missing out on.

haha.

agreed....

Although I had ripped some REM DVD-As to 24-192 a while ago. It is the only way I can play them. They are stunning.

My Juli@ can only do 24/192 via coax. I am toslinked.

LOL! Nice one garyi! Some of these audiophile recordings may sounds great but their musical content is certainly open to question. Perhaps we should start a thread in the Music forum ... 'Best Audiophile Plinky Plonk Piano and/or Dreary Women's Voices Albums' (LOL)

On the subject of USB sticks and the Naim DAC, I have tried three. The Sandisk Cruzer (8GB) works fine, the Kingston Data Traveller (8GB) works although you have to insert it a second time and the Transcend (8GB) worked twice and then never again. I have spoken with Steve at Naim about this and his suggestion is to send the stick back to the factory and he will get it into their R&D Department.

Not well.

I think I saw about 1/2 of Borat. Never seen anything but bits and pieces of Ali G.

i know but it will be years when all the high res will be available. so all we have is to rip our cd to a nas for convience and put cds in the loft were they belong

I beg to differ here.
For me, using USB-sticks is not a hassle at all.

I have about 22-23 (2GB = 4,90€, 4GB = 6€) of them in a neat little wooden box, everyone of ´em with a selfadhesive sticker.
F.e. one is called "Metallica - Master of puppets 24/192" (2 GB).

IMHO, the sound via direct USB is the best I heard.
Better IMHO than my CD5XS, better than the SB Touch...
