Polish Vodka? Part the Second.

The old thread was a deal of great fun for me, and as I am having a Birthday Party this weekend, I had hoped to revitalise the old Thread, which may be found here:

Polish Vodka?

Now consigned to being history, it still has much warmth and humanity in it, and hopefully we can carry on talking about such wonderous moments as we did then in this thread from now on!

It was one of those good natured parties that blessedly stayed low key.

Very pleasant time indeed, and as you may note from the new photos in the System Pics thread the tiying up is completed!

Well. I sincerely hope to have a Polish Beer and a Polish Wodka inside me in Poland by sun-down tomorrow.

I am staying with Mr and Mrs Frank Farrell in Warsaw for a few days, and I really don't think I have looked forward to a holiday more.

In any case, that is not really my point in posting - though I shall be out of touch for a week plus now - but on a small scale certain thigs might being improving. The news on Trident looks promising. If we run the absolute minimum possible of a nulear deterent then we can argue convincingly for non-proliferation.

And also it is brilliant news that Mr Obama will not see Mr Brown in bi-lateral talks. The UK so neds to remove itself from the bogus "special relatiuonship" with the US, where the UK is nothing other than an unsinkable US aircraft career! So please, Mr Obama, continue to ignore our Prime Minister, be it Mr Brawn, or in time Mr Cameron or Mr Clegg [Lib-Dem for our US based readers] and talk to your new found friends, the Russians [etc.] who will soon enough tire of you your cloying demands, and so please leave us alone in the UK.

I note the Pope ios to visit the UK in twelve months time. I profoundly welcome this and will endevour to be at one of his public appearances.

I welcome the notion that His Holiness will primarily be welcomed - in the diplomatic sense - by our Royal Familly.

I sign off for a few days now - and some will certainly be relieved - because of my visit to Poland ...

Best wishes to everyone who cares, from George

Dear Stu,

When I have finished he will be Mr. iTunes!

Dobranoc to y'arl, George

PS: I spoke to my one Polish friend - Pawel ... - who is in Crete till Friday this week, and we had a good laugh about the thought that I would be able to enjoy a real Polish beer rather than a can or bottle at least till next Friday, while he would not!

Stu,

My plan for next year is to ride the Carlton to Poland! However, I plan to navigate round Germany, and catch the ferry to Esbjerg [in Denmark], ride to Copenhagen, and catch the ferry to Szczecin or Gdansk!

PS. The bevy is nearly gone!

Whatever else, I am not canibalistic, and I do suspect that that you are animal rather than vegetable or mineral.

The second night of catching up has seen the rest of my lovely personaly imported Pan Tadeusz enjoyued in good company ...

On balance it really is time for me to enjoy a period of relative Forum quietude, as I am finding the cult of sonic splendour over discussion of the music being relayed is getting worse, and for me less and less entertaining.

I took many beautiful photos in Warsaw and its environs, but perhaps they are for much later if ever.

The Benson [antique silver pocket] watch from 1880 is keeping phenomenal time and make a healthy tick as well.

On the pop music front, I suppose I should accept that my view is well out of date, but that that view is that the arrival of the Brit-pop phenomeneon really signalled the end of talented and interesting artists actually making music, only to be followed up by trite music, badly performed by essentially lazy performers, who rely entirely for a professional sounding resault on over production and sensationalism, rather than any solid artistry.

I suspect that those who know what I have done concerning replay will either consider me a Hifi heathen or understand that my interest is fundamentally musical. The differences of replay quality between most compeentent competents for digital replay is far less than the difference between most recordings! Such differnces tend to the irrelevant in reality if music is the aim for the best music making. This rarely so much compromised [these days] by replay as by the essential, basic quality of the original recording.

It amazes me how people can worry about miniscule differences in digital systems of replay such as the ripping engine or the DAC used, as the differences are often so easy to ignore, when two LP cartridges can make such a massive difference in many cases and yet no one takes this as a sort of indication that there may be something radically wrong with much LP replay.

At its best LP replay can be very enjoyable if at a big cost, but it is never more - in my experience - musically accurate than can be easily managed with far less cost in the digital domain, unless the basic recording is so terrible that it can be be better presented in the veiling, inarticulate sounds that the LP groove can be so easily made to produce. Every recording I hasve come across that sounded sweeter on LP than CD was one that was fundamentally musically worse and needed the veiling shelter of LP-vinyl to sounds better. Of course one can obtain poor digital replay at any cost, but mostly - with discrimination - it is easy to get fine results for massivly less tha cost of a good cartridge, let alone the cost of an entire TT set!

Spend the cost of the TT on some good digitally restored recordings of great music would be my advice.

Sounds like a stuck digital record to me.

Surely vinyl microgroove LPs were most prone to getting stuck or more techechally becoming groove-locked.

Yes, stick to the CDs, instead of becoming stuck with the LPs.

Lots, but who would want all these foreign grockles looking at your window six months of the years?

However this is about 12 hours later in my front room!

Pawel on the left.

The other two are collegues of his!

One of them I carried home before some of the most trenchant posts I have ever made on the Forum.

Trouble is that my constitution is even stronger than the usual Pole!

Dear George

Picture received and installed. Wonderfully detailed. Thanks very much.

I have not read this thread regularily, but I will do so in the future. Well, you will have to stand my - perhaps sometimes a bit witty - comments.

Dear Poul,

My affection for the Polish is not a small one. My affection for some Plish is without obvious bounds ...

They speak painfully directly and without the polish of the Dutch, but they will never leave you to die in the
ditch even if they do not actually like you.

Mind you they might have something to sau about it next day!

Dear John,

I may be an amateur, but even I can see a few [of my Polish] photos worth looking at.

Listening to Bach's Double Violin Concerto on the peerless recording from HMV with Woldike [conductor] and the Danish Royal Chapel Orchestra ... {HMV from about 1946]

Amateur means somone who loves something, and I think your picture demonstrates much affection for the motive. This is one of the reasons why the picture is so good. There are other reasons too: The well judged balance in the composition and the technical exellency.

The old Volvo has survived another MOT with only repairs needed to the exhaust in the form of a new front pipe and gasket.

Volvos 240s grow old only very slowly.

Some statistics on riding the hilly route to and from Bishops Frome from Worcester.

Taking the car over [and riding back] I did what proves to be 14.1 miles in 52 minutes which is my best time ever by about seven minutes and going to fetch the car I managed 60 minutes. The journey last week was managed at somethoing like sixteen anad a quarter miles per hour which is not bad.

I had the slight wind to face this evening.

Whilst I was at the garage a late 1920s or early '30 Alvis 12/50 called in for [attended service] petrol in its original completely unrestored condition! Marvelous! This made my day!
