Art Rant

I have been spending some time looking through the commercial galleries dotted about the town to which I have recently moved.

"Relentless mediocrity" is a term that springs to mind to describe nearly every single painting that I see. And the prices! Perhaps the artists have a simple formula - multiply the cost of the support and the medium by at least a factor of fifteen but preferably twenty?

The use of large areas of red in paintings is a cheap trick as well which I see a lot of in commercial galleries but which sells paintings - ask any gallery owner.

Patrick Caulfield RIP

He bridged the divide (sometimes literally), and was undoubtedly one of the finest British painters of recent years.
Although that mayn't be saying much to some of you apparently.

I wish I'd bought that print of his now...

yeah I had a chance of staying in New York in '90 for a whole weekend on my own or buying a Francis Bacon print, I really thought long and hard. I stayed in the city for a great time but I still think about the other option. Tho I wonder about living with one of his intense pieces as I also didn't hve a steady home for a long time and knowing that prints will get banged about in many moves. I think I made the right choice at the time.
