Haydn Symphonies

Posted by: JeremyB on 30 March 2009

Just got bitten by the Haydn Symphony bug, intrigued by #44 which is the happiest funeral music ever and most of it sounds like it's in a major key rather than Em.

What is the best set or partial set? Couldn't help but place a pre-order for the Dorati complete set which is coming out in May at an amazing price. But scratching my head on the less complete sets, pulling a few LPs and comparing them they sound so different.

The set of Paris Symphonies released a few years back by Harnoncourt is superb.

It certainly is, and for me, Harnoncourt is our leading exponent of Haydn; all his recordings of the symphonies and masses are quite essential. He hasn't (so far as I know) tried to record them all, but he has cherry picked most of the best, and committed them to a superb set of recordings. His set of the London symphonies is also one to cherish (but Jochum is still worth a listen - I gather his live performances on BBC Legends are quite something but haven't heard them yet).

Pinnock has a very nice set (often very reasonably priced on Amazon and do check the market place) of the Sturm und Drang symphonies - to my ears he's a less profound interpreter than Harnoncourt, a little preoccupied perhaps with some superficial aspects of orchestral sound, but still excellent.

If you MUST have a complete set, look no further than Adam Fischer on Nimbus, now available for peanuts on Brilliant Classics - keep your eye on the 'Bay if that's what you fancy; he's not in Harnoncourt's league in my humble opinion, but never less than enjoyable and dirt cheap.

the london symphonies by jochum/london are quite nice.

There are a lot of fine (incomplete) Haydn symphony sets out there. Bernstein's CBS/Sony recordings of the Paris and London Symphonies are very fine, as are Harnoncourt's recordings of the same works. (Nowadays I tend to choose Harnoncourt first.) Beecham recorded some fun London symphonies. Jochum, Fricsay, Marriner, Szell, Reiner, Maksymiuk, and Ward all also recorded some good Haydn.

For complete sets, I'm thinking of trying Dorati. I have the Fischer set, but the London symphonies are weak, and I'm thinking maybe Dorati can do a bit better here.

last December on this forum I was recommended Colin Davis for the London symphonies - I bought them and very much enjoy them.

Thanks everyone, I was considering the Fisher set then I saw Decca are releasing the Dorati for half the already low price of the Brilliant set.

In an emergency yesterday I picked up Ton Koopman's 44,45,49 on Warner Classics from B and N for a super low price, it is really much better than I expected and great sound, also seemed a solid performance of the Sturm und Drang although I will check out the Harnoncourt too.

I grab a copy myself if it's that cheap over here in the UK - which it probably won't be, being rip-off Britain! Can you point me at the set you've ordered please?

Here is the info. I ordered mine form Arkiv music, my favorite site on the web, after the Naim Forum of course.

Happy birthday Haydn! (March 31).
The only one I have today is volume 8/symphs 1-19 on LPs, the playing is mighty fine can't wait to hear the rest, classical CD mastering these days does seem quite exceptional.

Granted, there are better individual performances of the various symphonies from conductors as diverse as Eugen Jochum, Leonard Bernstein, Trevor Pinnock, and Thomas Fey; but when all is said and done this remains the finest complete set of Haydn symphonies yet recorded, and its basic musicality only seems to grow more impressive over time. Consider the early works: the period-instrument folks have had their say, especially in this music, but where will you find more clearly etched bass lines (Symphony No. 16), finer horns and timpani (finale of Symphony No. 13, based on the same tune Mozart later used in the finale of the "Jupiter" Symphony), or a harpsichord continuo that stays in the background and doesn't flatten Haydn's dynamics by turning each symphony into a keyboard concerto?

Just listen to Dorati's band rip into the opening of Symphony No. 48; hear the wailing oboes at the start of the "Farewell" Symphony; or notice the intense string playing in "La Passione". Where will you find a more rustic trio of Symphony No. 88's minuet, such brilliance from the C-alto horns in Symphony No. 90, or a more consistent set of "London" symphonies? Bottom line: you won't. Yes, there are some quibbles. The minuets tend to be slow by modern standards, and the engineering is somewhat inconsistent. In some of the more unfamiliar works the orchestral playing isn't as fine as we now expect as a matter of course, but then Dorati surprises us with, say, his knockout performance of the six-movement Symphony No. 60.

The competition in complete cycles also isn't terribly strong. Naxos' complete cycle has some super individual efforts from a wide range of performers, but is weakest in the late works, just where it needs to excel. Nimbus (also Brilliant Classics) has some lovely volumes in its complete edition, but often sounds as if it were recorded in an echo chamber, (again) it's weakest in the "London" symphonies, and certainly the playing does not surpass what we have here.

By rights this set never should go out of print: it remains a landmark in the history of recordings, and if you don't have it this very reasonably priced limited edition becomes a mandatory acquisition. Get it while you can, and do what I did: put it on your iPod and you'll never lack for a wonderful discovery. You can take it with you.

Thanks Jeremy, I think it's about time I added the Dorati set to my collection, I've still only ever heard a couple of recordings from it after almost 20 years of Haydnphilia!

Heh, yes, this is the problem with Nimbus. Their strange approach to sound engineering has made it hard to enjoy a number of otherwise great performances. There seemed to be a view around in small English audiophile-oriented record labels in those days that had it that the acoustic properties of the (empty) concert hall were more important than the actual music! I can never forgive them for what they did to Gerhart Hetzel's recording of the Bartok concertos, otherwise quite the finest ever made.
