Classical HELP--a further question....

Posted by: gerry2 on 19 October 2006

The responces of others in this last thread were very much appreciated.
I wonder how much those lists, for starters and special interests, would vary, if the guidence offered vinyl only? The content of your suggestions for listeners wishing to learn more, would be affected obviously by avaiability.
Is there a vinyl expert around these boards?

Once again, thank you, I've started to listen and have a christmas giving list now! For people who will will very much enjoy the music!

Dear gerry,

In terms of classical issues, there is an awful lot of second hand vinyl out there. Some of it is very expensive and this price is not really related to the musical value of the content but the rarity of the actually pressing of the issue, so that for example certain pressings of a certain Furtwangler recording may sell for perhaps £60 in a specialist shop, while its reissue may sell for perhaps £3! I know which one I would be going for.

But there are very few new releases on vinyl. In my opinion vinyl nowadays for classical music can have its place, but really only for filling in the gaps between CDs! Oxfam often runs a nice range of second hand LPs. But obviously there is no consistency as to what the descriptions "mint," "good," "fair," and so on actually mean!

Personally I thought the virtual demise of the LP, as medium of choice for new issues for classical releases, was a very good thing!

In terms of repertoire, and performances, the issue of medium of release, selected, makes no difference!

Kindest regards from Fredrik

I'm no vinyl expert, but here are some suggestions, a little less dour and Germanic:

Mussorgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an exhibition
Respighi: Pines of Rome
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances
Barber: Adagio for strings
Stravinsky: The Firebird
Rossini: Overtures
Pachelbel: Cannon in D
Tchaikovsky: Capriccio Italien
Liszt: Les Preludes
Borodin: Polovtsian Dances
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherezade

(sod the Spelling)

Much of this is considered "junk" classical and I couldn't care less. Great fun for the beginner, as it was for me.

Regards, Good Luck, Happy Hunting ect.

Depending on where you live you can get lots of great classical vinyl from the bigger branches of the charity shops. As Fredrik points out, many of the specialist vinyl shops have turned into the equivalent of shops for stamp collectors.

Many of the greats, like Furtwangler, Walter, Lipatti, Schnabel, Serkin, Schwartzkoipf, Baker etc. can be had for a...er... song...

Cheers
