Never heard of them. Listening to the Myspace stuff from Thirteen Cities and enjoying it, so thanks Jeff (and not for the first time - I have The Decemberists to thank you for too).

How does it compare to earler efforts?

BTW, am totally baffled by this old thread locking malarkey. Of all topics, music is pretty much ageless. All the locking does is encourage fragmentary threads. I wanted to thank Simon Matthews for his Bird & The Bee recommendation and make a comment, but found it locked. Felt silly to start a new one.

Gary,

You're certainly welcome.

The only disc of RF I have is Miles From (1997), but I have seen their live shows 5 or 6 times and they allowed me to bootleg them a few times. Nice guys and local Portland-based. The link was posted knowing there are a couple die-hard fans on here.

Pleased you are enjoying the Decemberists as well, again some very nice folks. I have three of their discs, but have never been real fond of Meloy's voice. - I am adjusting some as I hear it more. I saw them one of the first nights they ever played back about 2000 or 2001, in Pdx in a small club as opener of 3 bands on that lineup. The crowd was very noisy and pretty much paid no attention to them. They allowed me to record but there is way too much crowd noise for it to be listened to, they gave me a copy of their ep in exchange for the efforts. I spoke to Nate (bass) afterwards and he knew then, that of 4 or 5 bands he played in then , he was sticking with the Decemberists as "this is the one that is going to make it". For a few years Nate was based out of SF but flew back to Pdx or wherever as needed to be in the band. Jenny (accordian and keyboards) is a sweetheart of a person and worked in our Pdx neighborhhod in a little bookstore to help supplement her band income. Doubt she has too much time for the bookstore recently, its been a little while since we saw here last. Chris (guitars, stringed instruments) is very nice and been in or played with numerous Pdx bands over the last 10 years. People as nice as them certainly deserve their successes.

Listening to a great download of the Decemberists from an fm broadcast in St Louis, available at http://www.archive.org/details/decemberists2006-04-13.fm.flac16 under the date 041307, though it is actually from 041306.

best regards

I have 3 albums by Richmond Fontaine. All of them have endured prolonged periods of repetitive playing. In fact they just continue to grow on you pretty much forever.

Albums are:
  • Post to Wire
  • The Fitzgerald
  • Thirten Cities

In my opinion they are all classic albums of their genre. If you have never listened to any of them just buy them and give them time, I am sure you will see what I mean.

Cheers

Norman

Sorry that should have been Thirteen Cities not Thirten.

When I want to hear them live, I put on Live At The Doug Fir Lounge, and I'm there. My favorite band by a million miles, so well spotted Jeff.
I think Winnemucca has to be the most all rounded and moving album and strangely is mostly overlooked, being a little way back now. Western Skyline brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it and Northline is one of their classic songs. I'd like to buy the whole world a copy of Winnemucca.
Lost Son is more brutal and punky, fab album with Mule being my top song.
Seen them twice now plus I've seen Willy play a few songs on his own to around a dozen of us in a bookshop basement, which was pretty special.
I am to RF what ROTF is to HMHB.
