Why Do Speakers Sound Different???

Posted by: Greg Beatty on 07 April 2003

OK - sounds like a silly question, but I didn't want to clutter the subject line with too much.

The real question is:

"Why do speakers sound different with different amplifiers?"

For example, my ProAcs sound light and thin with Naim amps but full with tube amps. And we read about 'synergy' between amps and speakers.

Is it something to do with the impedence curve of the speaker and how the amp deals with it?

Greg I think the first question to answer is
"Why do speakers sound different with the SAME amp on different nights"?

I suspect there's many variables at work here, at least one of which would be speaker sensitivity. Many moons ago I had some Wharfedale E20's which were fairly easy to drive (~ 90 ish W/Db/m from memory, but it was a long time ago). My current SF Signums are a little harder work tho. I guess is why the valve boys have to be fairly choosy when it comes to speaker matching, unless they're into the "serious" US muscle end of the valve market..
