NAT 01 Recap?

Posted by: audiogoose on 01 December 2003

I have an old NAT 01 chrome bumper tuner. I would like to know how often I need to recap it, if at all.
Also, can I use fuses purchased at Radio Shack to replace the one originally supplied, or do I need to get one from NANA? I don't see why one from RS wouldn't be just as good.
Thanks for any input.

Goose:
If your thinking of keeping the 01? Why not splurge on the XPS2-T...
This will take you further and save you a recap...
Just a thought....

True, like mine...The PS for the 01 sits as a paperweight...

Recap:
10 years for the PSU,
10 to 15 for the tuner. Recap costs are about 50/50 for PSU and 01. Last time i did it on a 17 year old, it was spectacular.

audiogoose, I had my old chrome bumper sent back to nana for complete refurbishing converting it to "new" olive style both inside and out. It basically gave me a brand new 01 which not only performed better but now matched my other naim equipment visually. This was a good investment for me as I use my tuner alot and I hope it will last me for many years to come. So if you are thinking of sending it back to nana for recapping and a general "tune-up" (pardon the pun!), then consider inquiring as to whether they still offer this upgrade. regards, david

Thanks for the replies.

David:
How much was the update from NANA?
I would be interested in this. I will email them to find out if the update is still available.
Thanks,
Jerry

Marc:
The XPS-2 is probably out of the question for now.
Thanks,
Jerry

audiogoose, it cost $1650 US for the complete refurbishing of the chrome 01. Not cheap, but you basically got a brand new 01. In the long run, I feel it was well worthwhile. david

I was informed by NANA that the upgrade to the olive variety of NAT 01 has not been available for the last 3 years.
Guess I will have to consider just the recap for the PS and the tuner head.
Thanks again to all who responded.

audiogoose, wonder why they stopped offering it. Anyone from NANA care to comment. Perhaps related to dave dever leaving. He was the one who guided me in the process though I think the tuner had to be sent back to salisbury to be properly worked on. david.

Just relaying what I was told in an email from NANA.

The NAT 01 was discontinued about 2 years ago due to certain parts becoming unobtainable (and the necessity to keep enough parts inventory for repairs). From what I recall, David had a major rebuild on his early model "fluorescent display" tuner inside and out (including a new motherboard in the 01) a few years back and this was before the tuner went out of production.

If you e-mail NANA with your tuner/PST serial no.s we'll check with the Naim service dept what is feasible at this point beyond recap and refurb.
