Mal Waldron
Posted by: John C on 03 December 2002
Arrived home today from a bad day at work only to see Mal Waldron has died, a jazz giant and hugely underated, he was long time accompanist to Billie Holiday, played with the wondrous Eric Dolphy and has a quite majesterial body of work on Enja and Hat Hut (with Steve Lacy).
His latest and presumably last is lovely lyrical and now sad. One More Time (on Sketch). Beautifully recorded with JJ Avenel and two tracks with Lacy.

Mal Waldron's beautiful bittersweet tune Soul Eyes alone is a powerful legacy. I especially love Coltrane's version.

Oh, this is a blow. I'd checked out this thread to read some discussion of his music, and I discover instead that Mal Waldron's died.
"Up Popped the Devil" and "Moods" (both on enja) were amongst the first jazz LPs I bought, 20 years ago.
I'm very sad at this news.

I also like Waldron's style, he was one of the greatest, no doubt.
The album I love a lot is "Where" from 1961 with Eric Dolphy and the (also) legendary Ron Carter.

Tony Williams died in Feb 1997 aged 51. Heart attack after gall bag surgery. I suppose we could turn this into a ghoulish musician obituary thread(see

Mal had a good innings so no need for sentimentality

S***!
I didn't know that TW was gone. Mal must have been 76.
