What is the right way to go......

Hi all,

I've been reading threads on here with great interest. I'm both a Mac & PC user and am just about to start building my library again from scratch.

The question is what is the best format to use? I'm happy to have 2 libraries (one for my iPod, the other for my Hi-Fi) as I think 320 MP3 files are fine for my iPod but I know lossless is better for home listening.

I see the HDX uses WAV files but many on here prefer FLAC, AIFF or ALAC files for streaming.

If Naim use WAV then I would assume that this is the way to go and just use iTunes for both my ipod (with less music on due to size of WAV files) and home Hi-Fi?

If FLAC is the format to go with then I'd use my PC with DBPoweramp and Foobar and my MAC/iTunes for my MP3 files/iPod.

Which way forward is best considering I'm starting from scratch (again!) Confused

I just rip in AIFF - i use the same library for my mac running iTunes into a DAC snd for my work and car ipods. The iPods just use playlists that i update as i need. Works for me and saves buggering about with different formats.

FLAC is most ubiquitous but will not play on a Mac easily.

AIFF might be your best bet but definitely not compatible with all players. It will work with everything you mention though.

Just to say, my NAS an AVA, rips my music into both FLAC & MP3. Thus ticking the appropriate boxes.
