Logitech H1000 Remote - any users here?

Hi all
And a very happy Christmas!
Now that we have added Sky HD my wife is in remote control hell! We have one for the Pansonic plasma, another for the matching HDD/DVD player, The Sky HD one and the gorgeous solid metal 500 series jobbie (plus the original Naim plastic one for the odd time that we need its functionality).
A friend has recommended the H1000 and I was just wondering if any of you fine people actually use one? If so, your thoughts and comments would be most welcome, articularly as to ease of use and ease (or otherwise) of setting it up.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris,
I was in the same situation about a month ago and did some googling, av sites, reviews etc and the Harmony One had several awards and many people seemed to prefer it over the 1000.
I bought the Harmony one based on the reports and am very happy with it, I run my CD5X, satellite TV, hard disc recorder, DVD and digital music ( mac through my supernait) and it works fine and it's is pretty easy to set-up. I would imagine the 1000 will be fine too if you choose it.
Hope this helps
Barrie

I've had an 885 for a couple of years now and it's performed very well. I've used it for 15 or so devices overall and it's handled every one perfectly, including Virgin's V+ remote in spite of Virgin having previously assured me that no universal remote would handle it. I used a Universal OneForAll for a while and didn't like the touch sensitive screen. As far as I can see the 1000 is all touch sensitive so that may be worth bearing in mind.

Thanks both. I did see your posts last month when I searched, Tom, but it was a bit inconclusive. I'm ok with the touch screen I think. I think Rachel will be just fine with icons to touch rather than rows of buttons! I just better programme it properly!
Thanks to you too Barry. Hope you both have a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

I had one for a few weeks and sent it back (from Amazon, no questions asked I just ticked the "performance wasn't what I expected box").
The touch screen is more of a "push hard" screen. Not like the iPhone/iTouch screen at all. The display/graphics I found were a bit basic and setting the thing up isn't a smooth process.
I'm sure others got on better with it though!

Get your local custom installer to sell you an IR/RF capable RTI remote control.
Fantastic product.
Can be entirely customised with macros too.

Thanks everyone. I got the H1000 and will program it tomorrow. My friendly dealer uses one in the dem room and it seemed fine.

If its the same software as my 885 you have a long hill to climb.

I have an 885, and IMO it wasn't too bad to set up. All of my devices existed in some shape or form on the online database, so my strategy was to let the buttons all be assigned automatically for each device and not bother with cleaning lables, layout etc up (which would have taken FOREVER).
However, I did spend a bit of time configuring the various "activities" menus so the soft keys were labeled correctly and did stuff that was immediately useful to me. Only had to add a small handful of custom commands here and there by making the remote learn directly from my existing remotes.
It took me about an hour to get it going semi-decently out of the box, and then some small adjustments along the way during the first week of usage. Actually I guess that it is a bit of a PITA to get going (though still much much easier than other universal remotes I've tried), but well worth it IMO.
FWIW, in my "listen to music" activity, I have the transport + numeric keys controlling the cdx2 and the volume + mute + channel keys controlling 202's volume + inputs. The eight soft keys are set up as follows:
CD Player Airport
CD Disp Amp Disp
Repeat [blank]
Balance Left Balance Right
(the first two map to the CD and Aux2 inputs, which are the only two I use).

I found setting up the 885 a bit of a dawdle. All my devices were in the database so it was just a matter of taking the standard layout, playing with it for a short time and then moving the custom keys about a bit, deleting those I didn't need, and learning a few from the original remotes so I could control the TV from the CD device, etc. I expect this could have been done through Activities but I never really investigated that feature.

It must just be me who finds the software cludgy, long winded and unintuative then, haha.

No I don't think it's just you Gary as I've seen others making the same comments. However, in 34 years or so I've used many software packages, some fine, most crap, and now I just get on with it as complaining rarely achieves anything.

For a couple of years I was using a Pronto remote, which I found pretty good, once I'd managed to ascend the long and steep learning slope required to program it!
Because the Logitech 1000 was in colour and was a bit neater (as well as being considerably cheaper) than the colour version of the Pronto I bought one & gave it a try. However, despite my best efforts and those of the nice Dutch chappy on the Logitech helpline we couldn't get it to operate the long macros I need for my A/V stuff. It also refused to change inputs on my 552 preamp, or even get it to learn the codes. Neither could you set variable delays between events.
The real killer for it was that its infra red output just wasn't powerful enough to reliably work the various devices from my sitting position. So back it went!
I ended up with the colour Pronto which has been great. It's very powerful and can work everything from the next town away (OK, I made that bit up).
Once you learn to program, it's immensely flexible and can also work RF devices. It's much faster to modify, which you need to be able to do as you go along.

Believe me Gary, I could use the exercise! Going to do it later today, so might be puffed out by this evening!

Hmmmm. Not exactly intuitive is it! We'll see if this is the right device for us once it has charged itself up. The programming has not gone well!

For a remote costing £200 I think the programming interface is pretty grim.

Hmm - i've got the 885 and find it very easy to use and programme - took a while to get used to it but the setup (web based) has really improved and now its really easy. Controls my system - the whole family use it (very handy) and its got enough IR oomph to reach my Geffen HDMI switcher on the wall behind the rack and well out of sight.

As I mentioned earlier I use the harmony One and find it generally fine, but I guess the operating system must be the same ?

I wonder if the touch-screenyness of the 1000 makes setting it up much more complicated than the 885 (many more options/permutations/etc)?
I must admit that I took the path of least resistance in programming - I let the device buttons set themselves up automatically as per the online database, and only bothered cleaning up the activities. This was meant to be a stop-gap measure just to get the remote going, but it worked so well I never bothered do it "properly".
This methodology does mean that every once in a while you can't control every last bit of functionality for your TV etc, but 95%+ of the time it works great. I'd rather just dig up the original remotes once in a blue moon than drive myself crazy programming the universal remote 100% perfectly.

I used the same process as Kartik, with the same results which works for me too

Other than the dark case it's not immediately obvious how it differs from the 1000. My 1000 is now almost there! As soon as it can actually turn on the Panasonic plasma from standby we'll have it cracked. It works fine with the 552 and the NAT05. It also turns the SkyHD box on and off quite happily and the Panasonic DVD recorder.

Apparently the software is different. Hopefully that means better.

Well I guess we'll see. The RRP seems to have gone up a lot so it ought to be better!
