LP storage

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 06 July 2001

I'm still in the throws of doing a complete makeover on my house, and need to find a new place for my vinyl.
Previously kept in rather over-engineered home-made racks, I now need something neater.
I have about a thousand LPs, and can't see that growing by more than 10%.
I've seen an Ikea "bookcase" with 5x5 spaces measuring 13 inches cubed which might do the job.
Any other suggestions?
(I don't want doors)

Ian Edwards has been making record/cd/video racks for a long long time. They're usually very adjustable too. He used to make them from relatively cheap materials for sensible prices. Now he makes them from solid hardwoods (I think) and they're quite expensive, but they are very flexible designs and built to last.

I own an old Ian Edwards in melamine which takes 500 records. I'm not using it so I could be persuaded to let it go, but you're looking for something neat so you need a total solution. Check up with him - he usually advertises in HiFi World methinks.

Frank.

If you want stylish go to somewhere like Roche Bobois, if they exist in the UK, you'll get nice 35cm deep shelving, the LPs are flush with the front. Comes in a number of real wood veneers and will cost you a bit less than a bargain used CDX, say +- £1500.

...I'd just build some more. It's cheaper & you'll getb exactly what you want.

I also stuggled to find furniture for LPs. Ended up with a big tall Ikea rack - I think it was called Bonde (the name's Bonde .. James Bon..) and there were various sizes and colours, door or non-door options etc.

I've got one of those. Its called something like "Expidit". I have had mine for over a year and its holding up quite a large amount of vinyl fine so far. Its a bargain for 169 quid. I also have over 1000 CDs racked up using Ikea "Billy" racks with the CD inserts - this cost about 200 quid, which is even cheaper than the case logic folders many seem to use (I hate the case logic system as you have to loose the CD covers).

I will post some pictures at some point.

I have a similar problem. My next door neighbour has just moved and left me his record collection as he didn't want them anymore. (wahey)!!

Lots of old Dylan, Baez and blues.

To be wife friendly I'm having to construct a couple of shelves in the cupboard under the stairs and store them in there.

An MFI bookshelf. Yours for 50 quid. Make sure you glue it together well though. I had one for three years and it was fine.

A thousand albums on an MFI shelf?
Must be quite a beast.

Tony has it nailed. I've got the one in "beech effect" wood veneer; as the only other option for the 5x5 is white (Ugh). But it holds over 1000 records very well and is quite strong.

The smaller (4x4?) models can also be obtained in a rather nice real maple veneer, though the price goes up steeply.

A neat option that Ikea provides is the ability to install drawers in any of the Expedit's cubes; very handy for the little LP-cleaning, etc. gear that we all have.

I've yet to find anything nearly as capacious and sturdy for that price, 'cept for DIY.

Cheers

Keith.

Rockingdoc (if that really is your name)....the MFI will take about 500/600 LPs. You'll needs two. It comes in all sorts of vinyl wood simulation. Stylish it ain't cheap it is.

However, if you want something a bit posh.... The Boltz range will do you (its metal and extendable too). It'll cost around $500 inclusive of shipping to the UK from the USA. See www.boltz.com for pretty pictures.

I use the rackit Systems media storage. They are solid oak and each LP module holds about 100 single LP's. The base is on wheels and you can stack up to 5 levels. They are about 16" wide. The beauty is there are LP storage units, CD drawers, drawers for video tapes, cassets etc. The LP units and drawers interlock with each other by dowels. Warning: Not cheap. I just purchased 2 LP units with bases on wheels and 4 CD Drawrs and two table tops all in OAK for $802, including shipping to NYC. The company is Per-Madsen Design in San Francisco. I have been using their systems since 1988 w/o a hitch.

Their web site is WWW.rackittm.com

Try the Cubestore in London - they make a variety of modualar cubes that you can stack up, with doors / no-doors in a number of colours.
I have a wall of them in one room, and they have absorbed '000s of Lps without collapsing.
