Mana soundbases with Royd Abbot speakers

Posted by: Boz on 13 May 2003

I have my Royd Abbot floorstanders' spikes on "stands-unique" protective chips on top of old solid victorian wooden floorboards.

I have read a bit about the Mana soundbases really improving the sound but have any forum members tried them with fast speakers like the 'abbots?

The speakers measure 8 inches wide by 11.5 inches deep any idea which size soundbases I need and how much they are?

anyone out there that can share their experiences ?

I have both Briks and SBL's mounted on Mana.

I think most people would define SBL's as fast and they did improve the sound considerably.

They are virtually covered by the SBL, so appearance is not an issue.

I bought mine second hand and got a mint pair for £100.00 inc delivery. I had plenty of offers and I got a good result from

Boz,

I've no actual experience with them, but the SBL sized Soundbases might fit if turned sideways. ISTR that Vuk uses/used a pair in this orientation with his Neats (although his speakers are/were very slightly wider than tall, the bases underhung quite a bit fore and [possibly] aft).

Probably best to check with Mana direct prior to purchase though.

As to their suitability performance wise, I haven't a clue. Could end up being too much speed and not enough emotion, but again I don't have any direct experience.

I do have a question for you though.

Do the Abbots require placement hard up against the back wall, or do they work well a foot or so out?

The reason I ask is that I am considering either a pair of Abbots or Ela Mk1/Mk1.5/Mk2 for my newly redecorated living room. As there is no available wall they will have to be positioned across a corner of the room (most speakers that can stand to be a foot or so out from a flat rear wall seem to do well in this position in my room).

My Naim gear will be moving to a more IBL friendly room whilst which ever new living room speakers I end up with will be driven by a Rega Elex with Planar/Planet/Radio/video up front.

Thanks,

Craig

I've attached a really terrible picture of one of my speakers. It's sitting on a DIY Sound Base. It's angle-iron topped with MDF, and about 12x12 inches. If you want, I can drag out my digital camera and take another.

I had a problem with bass going from my Royd Albions into the floor, and this pretty much cured it. I suspect I might get slightly better results with a real Mana Sound Base (the rest of my gear is on Mana at phases 5/4/3), but I don't feel any pain at the moment.

If you're handy, or know someone that can weld, then you can probably build one yourself. Otherwise, I suggest that you buy some from Mana. They'll offer a nice improvement to your system.

One of the resons I went for the Abbots (apart from the fact they are so fast and detailed) is they really are very unfussy about placement and work back against a wall or well out. I have mine about a foot out so you should be OK. My brother has similar set up with Rega Ela's and whilst they are great at the hiher frequencies I thought the Abbots added more bass but still very detailed.
