Hi Jonathan

If I Went To A Wedding then I'd always have great respect for any DJ who played a Saucy Haulage Ballad and go up to him and say Have you got any Dowland?.

1. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
2. Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
3. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Hearts of Stone
4. The Who - Who's Next
5. Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming
6. Dave Matthews Band - Busted Stuff
7. Steely Dan - Aja
8. Bad Company - Bad Company
I've left out double albums, live albums, greatest hits albums, etc., to keep in the spirit of the exercise. Also, while I think choices #1-5 would be on any desert island list of mine, there probably are about 20 albums that could find their way into choices #6-8 depending on my mood at that moment in time.

Dear Gary,
It ain't necessarily so!
There were no rules on that. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, for one example, chose eight records of her own singing, though with different composers writing the music. I chose eight different performing artisis and not more than three works from one composer! I could easily have chosen eight pieces by Bach!
Sir Adrian Boult appeared more than once and chose music performed by different musicians but more than one piece by one composer on each occasion!
Kindest regards from Fredrik
Well, last sunday Felix Dennis, of Oz trial fame, selected 8 tracks, with no reference to the albums they came from, so presumably you would get your selection of 8 burnt onto a BBC CD. I seem to recall the Jeremy Irons picked a a number of tracks that he actually sang on, I'm guessing, but he is probably right up there with Sarah B when it comes to vocal ability. He did pick something from the Local Hero soundtrack, so it wasn't all bad news.

Dear Diode,
I could hardly care less what are the details of the rules in the long running BBC programme in their application to individual cases!
This is a thread where I am asking people to specifically whittle their choice down to eight indispesible pieces of music. Most people seem to have made nice posts doing just that.
Thanks to those who have posted their favourites. ATB from Fredrik

Dear Dean,,
Gary, Diode and now your good self! Let's try tp spoil a bit of fun shall we?
There is something going horribly wrong on the Forum at the moment among old members and new. There was a time when a Thread like this would have been plain good fun, without issue, at least in the Music Room, which used to be known for politeness and easy difference. No longer apparently.
Nowadays, people seem to have to "put a damper on things," to use your phrase.
I am away for a few days now, and will be reviewing if it is worthwhile to continue posting here. It is becoming a rather spikey, brittle, narrow little place, IMO.
I shall not be the first person interested in music, who has lost interst because of the is trend. Any read anything from pe-zulu [for one example], here in recent months. I know why, but that is how the Forum is going, and as was said elsewhere, the Forum is only as good as it contributors' postings...

Hi Dean
Great music is great music - it can be folk, classical or modern plus thanks to the forum I've found jazz and soul music that I can appreciate. I'll never understand dance and club music, but that maybe because I can't dance and don't like high volumes.
I wouldn't like to stop the flow of new music. I'd need to go back to the late 60s to see as much emerging talent as we have today and I could easily be restricted to 21st century music (I'd survive in most perpetual decades, but not the 80s please). So if I'm only allowed 21st century music then
Oh My Darling by Basia Bulat
10 by Kate Rusby
Boys From The Abattoir by Waking The Witch
Burlesque by Bellowhead
Cruel Sister by Rachel Unthank & The Winterset
Faultlines by Karine Polwart
Sweet Liberty by Cara Dillon
The Drift by Scott Walker
and there so many more I could include as I left out Laura Cantrill, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eliza Carthy, Lisa Knapp, Mamma-Ra, Angie Palmer, Candie Payne, Emily Smith, Martha Tilston, Tiny Tin Ladies, Kate Walsh, Lucinda Williams and so on ... I'm still taking it that I have Cammel Laird Social Club and Achtung Bono as part of my HMHB collection as two finer 21st century albums would be hard to find .....

Now where've my Bonzo Dog Band albums gone ......

Plenty of new stuff would be on my list but knowing the tastes of forum members I don't want to piss anyone off with my choices. Records I listed are some nearly all members have heard so I thought it would be more fun that way.
