Most American Republicans believe Obama is Socialist Muslim Hitlerite Antichrist, Spe

On the heels of health care, a new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim—and 24 percent say "he may be the Antichrist."

To anyone who thinks the end of the health-care vote means a return to civility, wake up.

Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here's new data to prove it:

* 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.

The belief that Obama is a “domestic enemy” is widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come.

* 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
* 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president"
* 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did"
* Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."

These numbers all come from a brand-new Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.

• Michelle Goldberg: What the Polls Really Show The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."

The full results of the poll, which will be released in greater detail tomorrow, are even more frightening: including news that high percentages of Republicans—and Americans overall—believe that President Obama is "racist," "anti-American" "wants the terrorists to win" and "wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one-world government." The "Hatriot" belief that Obama is a "domestic enemy" as set forth in the Constitution is also widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come. It's the same claim made by Marine Lance Corporal Kody Brittingham in his letter of intent to assassinate the President Obama.

This poll is the latest and most detailed evidence of the extent to which Wingnuts are hijacking our politics. It should be a wakeup call to all Americans and a collective reminder, as we move past health-care reform, that we need to stand up to extremism.

John Avlon's new book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America is available now by Beast Books both on the Web and in paperback. He is also the author of Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics. Previously, he served as chief speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and was a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun.

That's all a bit alarming.

My three years in the US taught me I should ignore this sort of thing.

"Most Americans are normal thinking people" unfortunately doesn't make a great headline.

But for the safety of the rest of the world let us hope that most sensible US citizens don't simply watch while their politics are hijacked! Germany would never have had a Nazi dictatorship if the good, but un-news-worthy, majority had acted before the Nazis gained control of affairs.

It is indeed worrying for non-US people to read such things even if it is only the beginning. From the beginning can come the seeds of a tragic and destructive end. The choice of Palin for a leading role [had she been elected] suggests to me that it is time to act for moderation, and intelligent sense in the issue. The disaster is but one more election away at this rate.

96% of Americans like to have fun with pollsters who call during dinner to ask idiotic questions.

I once entertained some Jehovah's Witnesses to an evening listening to Handel's Messiah [two and half hours] after they invited themselves in! Tea and Messiah, gentleman? What were they to say! I insisted they listened carefully, thus sparing myself their spiel!

Thay never came back!

The vicar was impressed later in the week when I told him! {:¬)

I had the JWs at my place once - they called for reinforcements.

Whenever I think of America I think of velvet fascism. I predict the trickle of whistle blowers currently spilling the beans will turn into an avalanche.

Some time ago I predicted Obama will be assassinated.

Obama is definately a good guy - just look at the way he is treating the Israeli Prime Minister.

Has the photo of Adolf Hitler been touched up to make it look like Binyamin Netanyahu?

I heard a very interesting interview with Rham Emanuel and he was saying they incorporated many of the things Republican had required when Clinton was going to do this. Main one being a market/corporate based system (so they make money), and that people had free choice to get what they want. So be it

Those 2 conditions met along with a bunch of other things. Yet he noted they hate everything about it and seem to keep moving the goal post.
-----------
They've become the party of NO. People will get wise to them. They are so quick to spill fear and misinformation. Medicare is going to be lowered to 55, preexisting conditions are nixed. I know numerous friends who couldn't get coverage because of earlier problems, now they can.

It's so ugly politically I don't watch the news but maybe once a week. I don't need to see every move of the tennis match and all the lies.

I tell you 2 weeks ago I went thru a serious operation and thru Medicare it was only $250 for the 2 day stay and 6.5 hr operation. WOW I'd have paid ten fold as a copay.

Does anybody else think that the good ol' USA is disappearing up it's own exhaust?

Used to be, they were ignorant about the world outside their borders. Now it seems, they're becoming ignorant about reality inside their own country... Roll Eyes

For Brits, in the UK it would have been free.

The way the preceding questions are formatted in an opinion poll can sway the answers to the the key questions.

The preceding questions in the poll need to be published so that we can calibrate the answers.

No - USA is generally a fine country & has in most part a well balanced population
Unfortunately it has more than its fair share of loones, spooks & krazy points of view.

I know a number of republicans, most of which don't agree with Obama & his politics, but at the same time they do not hate him & some have a respect & a perverse admiration for what he has done.

However some republicans do live at the extreme fringes & I know a few of these
These people tend to believe that Nixon was honest & proven to be so by the Ford unconditional pardon, McCarthy was justified & George Dubya was the greatest ever world leading president & his Iraq & Iran objectives where stymied by arab sucking Europeans.
We just have BNP EPL UKIP etc.... same crap - different flags

Viva la difference - just don't give 'em power & guns

Chris,

I may be wrong, but judging by the content of Blueknowz's other posts and the fact that he lives in Ireland, I don't think he's John Avlon. The text of his post is from an article by Avlon that's all over the internet.

Sniper,

Obama's goodness pales next to your brilliance and thoughtfulness comparing the Israeli PM to Adolph Hitler.

Dear Haim,

Sometimes the additions to this forum tell us at least a much, if not more, about the authors of them as these contributions tell us about the subject matter. I would not worry too much about the more eccentric posts that appear from time to time.

The current Isreal and US stand off must give pause for thought though, even for the most fervent Zionists. The world is watching this, perhaps with surprise. It would be good if these most fervent Zionists sometimes realised that perhaps they are not invariably correct in their assumption of unconditional US support whatever they propose. There is no doubt in my mind that Isreal's diplomacy has entirely failed in this case, and a wake up call is being issued by Mr Obama.

Sometimes this sort of action can have the best possible of outcomes.

Well, try to stick to the point rather than attempt to read my mind. Do you think the photo has been touched up by an unscrupulous journalist? Check out the shadow under Netanyahu's nose? Has it been touched up to look like Hitler's little moustache or not?
Check out the pose. Is someone trying to send a subliminal message here? Journalists can be very naughty you know. I was immediately struck by the photo and the similarity between it and some photos of Hitler.

Look up Ann Coulter, she really is a piece of work.

And Republicanism is stronger than you think in the US. I couldn't believe the political views of some close co-workers from the US. We got on very well and quickly agreed never to talk politics. One guy from Alberta, another co-worker, made me sick from his right-wing Christian views. I couldn't believe how hateful this particular Christian was toward non-whites.

You guys don't like Ann Coulter either?

Some bureaucrat ran her out of Ottawa this week.

Come on! She is my favorite commentator of either gender.

I don't always agree with her, but she agrees with me. Winker

Go to www.Drudgereport.com. You will find a lot to hate, but real Americans read it every day. Not sure how Drudge will do with the Times UK going behind the firewall.

The media is inflammatory in both our countries. If we did not have Naim we would hate each other for your soccer and our beer choices.
