Timewatch on BBC2 tonight 'The Princess Spy'

Posted by: erik scothron on 19 May 2006

A documentary about Noor Inayat Khan, a young woman descended from Indian royalty who entered France as a British secret agent in 1943, working as a wireless operator behind enemy lines - a job with an average life expectancy of just six weeks. She lasted for several months before being sold out by a French collaborator. She had run rings round the SS even though the rest in her network had all been captured and all the rescources of the SS had been directed at capturing her.

She never gave the Gestapo any information despite months of torture and interrogation (most poeople dont last 5 mins)and finally she was beaten to a pulp by an SS officer who only stopped because he was tired. She was then shot.

I watch this documentary in awe and respect and then I glance at my newspaper which is full of the news re. the new bunch of fuckwits in 'Big Brother'. What a sad country we have become.

God bless you Noor Inayat Khan - George Cross

I am afraid that sums up where we are heading, Eric.

I will be doing my utmost to avoid any sight or sound of Big Brother for the next however long it is. This will be easier said than done as these morons invade every facet of the media while their circus is in town.

Time to switch off the tv and listen to music for even longer than usual.

Seconded Erik;

We owe a terrific debt to the bravery of such exceptional individuals. I've just watched the excellent TV programme - a humbling experience.

I'm with you on 'Big Brother' too, being utterly bemused by its appeal. A TV critic summed it up well in one of the papers with something like:-

'The manipulation of cretins for the entertainment of morons'.

Dear Friends,

Where we have been heading for sometime.

In 1982, I remember almost falling off my chair laughing at the Telegraph TV page descrition of 'Top Of the Pops.'

"The participants appear overdue at the asylum!"

Good night from Fredrik

More seriously, there Heroes of the Wartime should be better known now, but to talk too much about this is thought old fashioned in some quarters. That is too bad.

It does not always suit the European Agenda or whatever to think to much about such things.

Eric, I expect and hope that the qualities and ideals held by Noor and others are still alive and swimming about in today's gene pool and will surface when needed. I do agree that the ratio of fuckwits to others has changed of late and not in a good way.

If you enjoyed this program, I can recommend a very good book.

Written by Josephine Butler; entitled Cyanide In My Shoe. ISBN 0906324211

She was the only woman in Churchill's inner circle, and she was told by Churchill nobody will know about you, and there will be no medals for what you are about to undertake.

It really is a riveting read.

That is the definition of bravery. A moving story of self sacrifce for the greater good.
How thankful we should be to people like them?
May their names live for ever.

Don't get me started on the shit that is BB.

Thank you Roy, I have read a little about Capt. Norton in The Times but not as much as in the link you kindly provided. What a pity all of that information was not printed in all the newspapers and only a little about Big Brother.

Yes, Howard. When I was a boy people like Capt. Norton were my heroes. Who are the heroes of today? I wonder if people like Noor would have thought their sacrifice was worth making if they could see the country we live in today. I am sure she would given the alternative that was on offer at the time. I wonder how many people watched last nights programme about her life and how many will watch BB?

Blimey! I'd read about his deeds when he was awarded his VC, but the newspapers really didn't do justice to his bravery. Big cojones indeed!
