Well the digital projector in the Irish Film Institute isn't a patch on their analogue projections --- they usually put up an apology, if for some reason the film doesn't arrive and a digital version has to be shown.

George Lucas of Star Wars fame is a real advocate of digital cinema projectors. "Episode II Attack of the Clones" was shot in digital and later copied to film. In this country certain theaters were equipped to show the digital version of the movie using DLP projection technology. I was able to see the movie at one of these theaters and the result was absolutely stunning.

One of the reasons Lucas has given for preferring digital technology, aside from the special effects, is that unlike film, there is no deterioriation in the various generations of copies made from the master for distribution. Likewise, in theaters, there is no detrioration in the projected image after multiple showings.

As I recall, Lucas indicated that all his future movies would be done in digital. With Star Wars Episode III due out in May, you may want to check and see if it will be shown in digital in your locale.
