LP12 (Valhalla/Ittok/10x4) v p25 (RB600/10x4)

Guys,
I might have the opportunity to sell off my p25 for a LP12 for about the same price. The lp12 is without the cirkus upgrade.

Here comes the tricky part.

Is it worth it?Is it that the lp12 will be better or just different?

Assuming I will have no problems setting up the LP12.

It will be mostly different, but I'll give the edge to the Linn due to the better arm. I had the Linn LP12 + Valhalla last time as well. It will be better once you upgrade the Linn LP12 to full status.

Of course, there are tons of articles on setting up the Linn, with different opinions too. So if you're going the Linn way, you better start reading, and extracting everything you can get from BTW and Supreme Master ... but keep an open mind of course. Like Ben had a great-sounding Linn LP12 (selected by Julian Verecker himself), but he also has a different way to set it up ...

Silklee,

A couple of months ago I listened to a P25 to upgrade from my last TT, an old Planar 3. IMHO I didnt rate it as a big improvement over the 3. I did like it, as it had the same type of Rega sound, but not enough to splash out.
In the end I bought a S/H LP12 with Ittok 111 and a K18 for less money than the Rega and arm an its own.
The Linn however is over 20 years old, even though it is in very good order. How much it will need spending on it when I eventually get it serviced is anyones guess.
As for setting up, I put mine in the back of my car, travelled 90 miles home, put it on a upsidedown wooden box, pluged it in and enjoyed!
My point? If you like the sounds an LP12 makes then buy one, if you cant afford a new one then look for a good secondhand one and forget all the hype, its only a turntable when all said and done, not a space shuttle.

Yours, happily listening to records, Trickytree
