Nait 1 vs Nait 2

Posted by: mykel on 03 June 2001

I have a Nait1

Was just wondering what are the differences in design / specs and sound ??

Anybody know what the power is on the 2, I know the 1 is 18wpc ( 8 ohm )

Just a bit curious as I notice that ALOT of people have a Nait2 either in use or in the closet.

thanks

Hi Mykel,

ehmm,..just wondering, why you wanna know ?
Some say the Nait is 12,some say 15 and you say 18 watts.
With the Nait-2 the same story goes:
Some say 15 watts,some say 18 watts.
I guess the truth is somewehere in between. Anyway, they both sound much more powerful than they really are.
I also use Kan-ll's at the end of my Nait.(2)

Tried a 72/140 last week,but to my sursprise,the improvement weren't that big.

I must say, I do like the looks of the Nait-2 a little more. (the symetrie)

Alco.

To my ears, the 2 was much better.

The 72/140 is better than the Nait2 - much better,
only I'd never listened to a 72 without a power supply.

Hi Arye,

I listened to a new-style 72 connected to an old-style 140, whithout PSU.

Sure, (as I said) the 72/140 certainly was better
than a Nait-2. (especially in the mids)
But the improvement weren't that big to justify it's price. (even with 50% discount on the 72/140!)

Greetings,
Alco.

i always wonder why nait2 has 3 little knobs,
anybody can explain me?

When I contacted Naim about a service history of my amp I asked what the power rating was

I was told it was 18 watts into 8 ohms and "more" into 4.

I was led to believe that because of the PS mods in the Nait2 that it was a bit better controlled ans smoother without loosing the boogie.

I am looking into buying a 72d 32.5 with either a 110 or preferabley a 140 in my price range. I have the pre set aside, just waiting to find a power. I will not sell the Nait, probably send it to Dimexes (sp?) for a recap, then either put it in the closet or maybe replace the HK tuner on TV/Video duties.

Still Curious . . . .

tzk,

The three small knobs are from left to right; balance, mute/normal/mon, power.

mykel,

I borrowed at least three different original NAITs prior to settling on the NAIT 2 that I currently use, including a late green LED shod version.

FWIW, I found the NAIT 2 to give a somewhat more refined sound without losing much of the originals excitement. They both seemed to exhibit similar levels of power and control, although I was using them with very undemanding loudspeakers at the time.

Interestingly, the best sounding of the NAIT 1s that I tried had its main board dampened using a bit of expanded foam packing material wedged between it and the chassis.

Another consideration that swayed me towards the 2 was the effect that the original NAITs balance control had upon the sound of the channel that it attenuated (left?), I couldn't ignore its negative influence. As I turned it down from the fully opened position, it progressively worsened the sound of that channel. The problem with bypassing the balance pot is that one could no longer correct for the volume pots inherent low level channel imbalance, particularly if one uses CD as source. My particular NAIT 2, while not perfect, seems much better in this regard. I believe that Naim have indicated that a higher quality replacement volume pot will not fit in the space provided. I often wondered if replacing the originals balance pot with that of the 2 wouldn't be the best compromise.

I know of a former NAIT 1 user who had the balance control bypassed and employed attenuated interconnects between his CD player and aux input to, in his words, amazing effect. In a reply to a request that I made on the old forum regarding the use of attenuated interconnects, Julian suggested that they would alter the input impedance and cause more problems than they would solve.

Hope this helps,

Craig
