Art Farmer Quartet

One of the best, if not the best, jazz recordings of a quartet featuring trumpet has just been reissued on Gambit. It is called "Art" by Art Farmer, recorded in 1960 and originaly released on an Argo LP, which I bought when it was released. The CD also has another Farmer quartet recording called "Perception", which is also very good if not at the exalted level of "Art". This is simply some of the finest lyric trumpet playing I have ever heard, rivaled perhaps only by Chet Baker at his very best. The remastering is superb and accurately relects the excellent work of the Nola studio in New York. As a bonus, the cover art contains the original striking oil painting of Farmer. Unquestionably this will be the jazz reissue of '07 for me. Snap it up while you can.

Not the quartet, but if you are an Art Farmer fan, locate "Big Blues" on the CTI label, with Jim Hall on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, Steve Gadd on drums, and Mike Moore on bass.
It has been one of my favorites for over 20 years.
