Neil

A friend's CDSII started doing this a few weeks ago. Its 'refusals' became more frequent and then it died!

My CDSII deals happily with everything I put in it, but I do keep the puck and platter clean with blu-tack. Spinning the puck rubbers can help.

My CDS2 died a month or so ago. Needed a new transport. Nana did a wonderful bit of surgery.
Sounds great!!!

The symptoms are the same. ERR...all the time.

Mine has skipped a bit with the new copy protected cds. I hate it....

Regards to all,

Marc

my CDS2 is very sniffy about playing CDRs frequently displaying ERR when starting up , and CDRWs are an absolute no. I am aware that Naim say their CD players are designed to the "Red Book" standard, but why does every other CDP I own, ranging from high end to very low end, play all CDRs without a problem?

"my CDS2 is very sniffy about playing CDRs"

RD,

the brand of discs makes a lot of difference, IME, and so does recording at low speeds.

cheers, Martin

This statement that the CDS 2 is sniffy about playing CDRs is very worrying. I am on the cusp of the upgrade from CDS 1 to CDS 2 and have lots of CDRs.

Is the observation generalisable or a one-off finding? The CDS 1 has exhibited no problems.

I have not had a problem playing CD-rs on my CDSii apart from the very first ones I made - I then upgraded to the latest verson of the CD writer software and they have all played successfully - even used it to rescue commercial disks that would not play on the CDSii because of manaufacturing fault, yet the copy will play - my recorder only works at 4x max for writing so that is what I record at with "no name" cheapest CDrs.

The CDSII should play CD-Rs without any problems (as should all our CD players). For optimum quality try to use decent blanks. With 74 minute TDK CDXRGs available widely at around 49p per disc there's no excuse for using anything less. Also try not to write at more than 4x speed. In my tests this seems to be the best compromise between speed and quality.

Problems may arise with cheap CD-Rs which are poorly manufactured. Sometimes the central section of the disc can be frighteningly thin and the puck can have difficulty gripping the disc resulting in an ERR message. Gently teasing out the rubber grips to their full extension can usually cure this.

Oh, one more thing, try to steer clear of 80 minute (700MB) CD-Rs. They'll play but there are noticeable audible losses compared to their 74 minute (650MB) counterparts.

CDRs with CDS1 / CDS2

I upgraded from CDS1 to CDS2: it's really more than worth the money, especially if you purchased the CDS1 second hand (as I did)...

My CDS1 played almost all CDRs I burned with my Plextor writer. I use only Mutsui CDRs because I had very bad experience with noname CDRs. The CDRs which caused skipping on my CDS1 were nonames, but these now play without any problems on my CDS2!

I would recommend to burn CDRs with half of the max-speed if possible, but not faster than 8x. If burn-speed is to low it also may result in difficult-to-read-disks...
