SPEAKERS FOR LINN CLASSIK
Posted by: David Sutton on 10 September 2002
I am about to buy a Linn Classik for my flat in London. Can anyone suggest some smallish standmount speakers? Living in the Middle East does not give me the opportunity to troll round stores doing dems, so I would like to draw up a short list, before I next visit.
AE1s?
Dynaudio Contour 1.3s?
thanks in anticipation

bookshelf speakers
I've also heard a Classik through a pair of B&W Nautilus - excellent results but pricey!

A mate of mine recently got a Classik and a pair of Katans which sound fine. There's also the £50 Linn brackets available which work pretty well. May be a bit pricey, think the Katans are c.£600.
I wasn't that convinced by the Classik when Linn launched it but my mate convinced me otherwise. There's no way he (or more importantly wifey) would have blown close to £2k on a lots of boxes system, but she is chuffed that the new hi fi is so 'neat' and he's delighted that it sounds great. It's a very easy recommend to non HiFi chums too, and at least gets them into a real dealer rather than the local department store.

I must say I was impressed with the Classik when I heard it through decent speakers. Some friends just bought one secondhand - they only have a small flat and a separates system wouldn't really fit in. The Classik though is an ideal compromise for them and several orders of magnitude superior to their old Technics stack system. Quite a bargain (inc. tuner) for 550 notes.

I am not very keen on Kans and need something that can produce a bigger sound and something that resembles a sound stage. This is alot to ask from small boxes. the views on the Classik are consistent with mine. I dont have the space in my London flat for anything that resembles a Naim rig and the convenience of a single package cannot be beaten. Why didn't Naim come up with such a smart idea??

It is a shame Salisbury didn't think of it first, but I doubt they'll be eager to jump on the bandwagon now! - it would just be so 'me too!'.

I have a colleague who recently purchased a Classik/Katans system and he speaks very highly of it. That is understating it - he is absolutely delighted.
I have to admit however that I haven't yet heard his system.

I use Keildihs with my Classik, but feel that are a bit much for the room.
I went away from the one box solution, and hid a power amp under the sideboard to drive the speakers.
I have tried some smaller bookshelf Mission speakers which worked quite well, but would be interested in both solutions.

I ended up with AE1s. I am very impressed and would strongly recommend this arrangement. The speakers are very fast and can produce commendable bass for such small boxes.
Thanks again!!
