Graduation gift ?

Posted by: Van_The_Man on 01 July 2007

My son has just achieved a first class honours degree in history from Robinson college Cambridge. Obviously my wife and I are very proud of him and would like to buy something to commemorate this.
The question is what.
He's had the watch and fountain pen sets. Any ideas (of a couple of hundred pounds) would be greatly appreciated.

How about putting it towards his student loans or pension plan Frown

What every History Graduate needs when starting their first vocation - a McDonalds apron Smile Winker

I'm sure he'll do better than that, and a History degree does open up a lot of different possibilities.

If he has a lot of digital photos from his time at University, why not offer to pay to have them professionally formatted into a well-produced photo-album?

Best regards,

Andrew

What about asking everyone you know if they can get him a job or even a job interview?

A holiday

What Rasher said. The gift that keeps giving your whole life through.

I'd get him the complete HMHB catalogue - after all if he's a historian then this is the definitive commentary on the late 20th century.

Pension.

My dad did this for me last year after I graduated, I do recall that it had to be opened with 1k - but, it has achieved 12% gains so far, and it bloody needs to if I am to stand a chance of retiring!

i have a 19 y-o- in college, so i can appreciate (btw, i have a history degree). we were planning a new musical instrument as he is getting a music degree. however he also seems to like the idea of an investment account he could watch grow and learn about investing as well. or a grand tour - but i suppose that's more than a couple hundred....

Down payment on a useful qualification perhaps
Posted on: 03 July 2007 by domfjbrown
Ouch!

I'd rather have a FH in a "non-useful qualification" as you so elequently put it, than the third hons in computer science/cybernetics I ended up with (thanks to being diddled onto the course under false pretences - ie lying).

At least he might end up with an interesting job. Computers and IT in general suck after 10 years. Get me out of here!

I'd go for the holiday option re the cash, btw.

At some point the FH has to be house trained to work, it may mean an accountancy qualification, teaching certificate, or a Law conversion course etc.

At the least he will have to serve as an "apprentice in some business or profession.
unless he carves out an interesting career as himself.

Premium Bonds. If he has any luck, he'll win enough to pay off the loans!

Hi van,

Maybe a bit off the mark, but some friends bought one of our acquaintances a night with a high class 'escort'. Very satisfying, apparently.

Van,

Watching this thread carefully having similarly discovered that I too have graduated with a 1st today.

Although it is probably outside your stated budget, a ticket to travel is probably the most memorable thing you can give to your son.

While celebrating with a mate tonight, who is a consultant psychiatrist, his compliant was that his carreer had been on rails since the age of 18. His greatest regret was not travelling more. I travelled all over the world as a youngster but started studying late in life.

Just a thought.

Regards

Nic

P.S. I was hoping for a shag but my wife has crashed and burned!

If he does not have any firm ideas what to do - buy him a session with a careers consultant to help him understand the best options for him to follow.

Cheers Rasher, but I would have been lucky to raise a smile last night Big Grin

Well done nicnaim. They don't just hand out firsts to anyone.

Hi Neil,

The suggestion from Nic (nicnaim) of a gift that involves travel sounds like a good idea to me.

Many congratulations to your son on a huge achievement. Robinson is my alma mater, from which I emerged with a very poor third in Natural Sciences in 1984. Do you know if the place mats in hall still say "Rob Coll"?
